Women's Soccer Advances With 1-0 Shutout of Radford

Emily Lanham's goal in the 25th minute stood up as High Point, the No. 6 seed, sent third-seeded and defending Big South champion Radford home with a 1-0 shutout of the Highlanders Thursday night in the first round of the 2003 Radisson Hotel High Point Big South Women's Soccer Championship at Albion Millis Stadium.

The Panthers (9-9-0) will face seventh-seeded Birmingham-Southern (a 2-0 winner over second-seeded Coastal Carolina) in the semifinals Friday night at 7:30 pm.

Lanham took control of a loose ball directly in front of the goal and pushed a shot past Radford keeper Tara Oleartchick for the only score of the game. Wendy Williams tallied the assist on the play to give the Panthers the only goal they'd need.

The Highlanders (8-8-3) had several opportunities after Lanham's goal. Without question, their best came in the 79th minute when Big South Player of the Year Nikki Porter launched a shot which rang harmlessly off the right upright.

HPU played one player down for the final 8:05 after Williams was sent off with her second yellow card of the match. But the Panther defense, led by Anni Svensson, Lena Svensson and Eileen Mazeika, kept the Highlanders at bay and helped Panther keeper Katie Smith record her second-consecutive shutout.

Smith stopped five shots, while Oleartchick had three saves for the Highlanders in a losing cause.

Friday's action at Albion Millis Stadium begins with the first semifinal, a 5:00 match between No. 4 seed UNC Asheville (10-6-2) and No. 8 seed Charleston Southern. The match between HPU and Birmingham-Southern (7-11-2) follows, with the winners meeting at 7:00 pm Saturday for the League title and the Big South's automatic berth in the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship.

Both matches will be StatCast live on bigsouthsports.com.

Tickets are $5 per session or $8 for an all-tournament pass and can be purchased at the gate. For information call (336) 841-9276.
