Wendy Williams and Jen Evans scored two goals apiece as High Point ran its record to a perfect 3-0-0 in Big South play and took sole possession of first place in the League with a 4-1 victory over Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon in Charleston.
The Panthers, winners of four of their last five contests, evened their record at 5-5-0 on the season. CSU dropped to 1-9-0 on the year and 0-2-0 in Big South play.
The victory also sets a school record for Big South victories (three) since the Panthers joined the League in 1999.
Williams got HPU on the board when she booted her first goal past CSU keeper Jenna Hatlestad after a long throw-in and cross from Lena Svensson in the 3rd minute of play.
The Bucs answered back with an unassisted Jenna Baker goal in the 12th minute, but twice High Point utilized headers from Evans (both times off assists by Ryan Hays) in the 25th and 29th minutes to give the Panthers a 3-1 advantage.
HPU took a 4-1 lead in the 38th minute on Williams' second goal of the match, which was unassisted and came when her shot deflected off a Buccaneer into the net.
Charleston Southern managed only six shots against the stingy Panther defense, while High Point reeled off 21 shots. HPU also held an overwhelming advantage over CSU in corner kicks (7-1).
High Point goalie Katie Myers saved four shots in the winning effort. For CSU, Miki Wilson relieved Hatlestad in goal for the second half, and both Buc keepers tallied four saves.
The Panthers return home for a crucial Big South contest against Liberty Thursday night at Albion Millis Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
