Men's Soccer Wins Against Longwood, 2-1

Matt Wood scored twice to help High Point increase its winning streak to two with a 2-1 win over Longwood Saturday night in Farmville.

The Panthers improve to 4-9-1 on the year, while Longwood (a provisional NCAA Division I member) falls to 5-9-0.

"I am so pleased that this team is slowly putting it together," HPU head coach Peter Broadley said. "Finally, our forwards are finding the back of the net and finishing the same kind of chances we had been missing earlier in the season."

Wood got HPU on the board in the 7th minute when he scored off a cross from Kirk Rudder. He then made it 2-0 in the 27th minute off assists from Alex Thompson and Chris Archer.

"It feels great to finally find our rhythm," said Wood, who also had the game-winner in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Radford. "I'm excited that our hard work is finally paying dividends."

Longwood cut the lead in half in the 37th minute on a goal by Stuart Bertsch. James Agorsor was credited with the assist.

Both teams battled it out in the second stanza, with Longwood tallying seven shots to High Point's five, but failed to convert.

Longwood pressed hard in the second period, but High Point dug deep with keeper Matt Long's four saves and stellar defensive play from a back four that includes two freshmen, to produce its fourth win of the season.

The Panthers will be back in action when they host Eastern Mennonite in non-conference action on Monday night at Albion Millis Stadium. The start time is 7:00pm.
