Scott's Layup Beats Buzzer And Winthrop, 56-55

Box Score

High Point's Stephanie Scott took a pass from Keauna Vinson and made a layup just before the buzzer to lift the Panthers to a come-from-behind 56-55 win over Winthrop Wednesday night at the Millis Center.

HPU (12-7, 4-3 Big South) snapped a three-game skid with the win. The Lady Eagles fell to 6-12 (2-5 in league play), and saw their two-game winning streak come to an end.

HPU led for most of the first half, but trailed the entire second half until Scott's layup as time trickled down. The Panthers trailed by as many as 11 points (43-32 with 13:55 to go) but whittled the lead down.

Trailing 55-50 with 2:08 left, Misty Brockman nailed a jumper to cut it to three. After forcing a miss on the other end, Brockman made another jumper to pull HPU within 55-54 with 34 seconds left.

The Panthers fouled Winthrop freshman Jessica Anger with 17 seconds left, and she missed the front end of the one-and-one. Keauna Vinson grabbed the rebound, but Brockman's layup with eight seconds left went off the iron. Winthrop's Stephanie Pannell was fouled, but also missed the front end of her one-and-one.

Vinson grabbed another rebound, dribbled the length of the court, picked up her dribble in the paint and tossed the ball to a streaking Scott, who laid it in just before the buzzer sounded for the win.

Brockman led all scorers with 23 points, while Scott posted 12 points and seven rebounds.

Pannell (17 points) and Anger (14 points) led the way for Winthrop.

Both teams hit the road Saturday for 2:00 pm tip-offs. The Lady Eagles step out of conference and travel to Atlanta for a date with Morris Brown, while HPU heads west  to face UNC Asheville.

HPU HONORS MILLIS SCHOLAR-ATHLETES: At halftime, 158 student-athletes, cheerleaders, and sports medicine students were honored as Millis Scholar-Athletes for achieving a 3.0 or better grade-point average.
