Elon held High Point scoreless for the final 2:22 and broke a three-game skid with a 65-61 win over the Panthers Saturday night in men's basketball action at the Koury Center.
The Panthers (5-11, 1-4 Big South) suffered their fifth heartbreaking loss in a row.
Trailing 56-47 with 7:49 to play, the Panthers put together a 12-1 run and grabbed a 59-57 lead with 3:55 left on a Joe Knight three that capped 10 straight points by the sophomore guard.
Tied at 61-61 with 8.7 seconds to go, Shamar Johnson made a pair of free throws to give the Phoenix a 63-61 advantage. Knight came down the court and misfired on a three, and Johnson and Gary Marsh made one-of-two free throws each in the final seconds to ice things.
Knight led all scorers with 23 points, while Kashawn Hampton tied a career-high with 13 points off the bench.
Elon got 17 points from Ross Sims and 16 from freshman Scottie Rice.
The Panthers host UNC Asheville Monday night (7:00 pm) in the Millis Center.
