BSC Holds Off High Point, 64-60

Birmingham-Southern survived 22 points and 11 rebounds from Danny Gathings to outlast homestanding High Point, 64-60, Saturday night in men's basketball action in the Millis Center.

High Point falls to 5-10 on the season, while BSC improves to 10-6.

In a battle of Panthers and between future Big South Conference foes (the game doesn't count in the league standings), BSC led 35-26 at halftime, but HPU clawed back and took its first lead of the game at 45-42 on a Dustin Van Weerdhuizen three-pointer with 12:12 to play.

High Point held the advantage for nearly seven minutes and led by as many as four before BSC re-took the lead at 54-53 on a layup by Josiah James.

The teams battled back and forth and were tied 60-60 with 1:06 left after a Gathings layup. But four free throws by Derrick Williams (two with 35 seconds left, two with 17 seconds remaining) gave Birmingham-Southern the win.

James led the Alabama Panthers with 17 points, while Corey Watkins added 11 points and Williams 10 points.

Gathings' double-double was his seventh of the season. Freshman Jeff Allen posted a career-high 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting. Van Weerdhuizen added 12 and currently stands at 1,000 points for his High Point career.

Both teams get Elon next. BSC plays the Phoenix (5-9) there Monday night, while HPU visits the Koury Center next Saturday night.
