Men's Soccer Falls 1-0 At West Virginia

Aaron Pitchkolan's goal in the 13th minute stood up as host West Virginia held off High Point, 1-0, Friday night in the season opener for both schools.

High Point keeper Eric Lona made seven saves, but the Panthers were kept out of the scoring column and lost their opener for the first time since 1998.

Kenzo Tochiki and Danny Kitching led the Panthers (0-1) with three shots apiece. Overall, the Mountaineers (1-0) outshot HPU 19-8.

Pitchkolan's goal came on a header following a cross by WVU's Justin Freeman and proved to be the game-winner.

"Although we didn't win, I am pleased with how we played," HPU head coach Peter Broadley said. "The stat sheet may not show it but, we matched them pretty well and at times outplayed them."

The Panthers return home for a pair of home games next weekend, beginning with the home opener at Albion-Millis Stadium Friday night against Marshall. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:00 pm.
