High Point's women's soccer team dropped its season opener to East Carolina, 3-1, on a rainy night at Bunting Field.

East Carolina's Amanda Duffy helped the Pirates (1-0) draw first blood with a goal in the fifth minute. 

HPU junior Emily Lanham tied the score with a goal in the 30th minute off an assist from freshman Wendy Williams, and the game remained deadlocked past halftime.

But ECU pulled away in the second half on goals by Sarah Stoltz (50th minute) and Meghan McCallion (88th minute). McCallion also had two assists on the night.

HPU (0-1) was outshot 14-8. Junior goalkeeper Katie Smith made five saves.

The Panthers open the home portion of their schedule on Sunday at 2:00 pm against Rider at Albion-Millis Stadium. Admission is free.
