High Point scored 26 consecutive points in the second half to wipe away a 20-point deficit, but couldn't hang on and fell 68-65 to future Big South foe Birmingham-Southern in a battle of Panthers Monday night at the Millis Center.
HPU (8-14, 4-5 Big South) dropped its third straight game, while Birmingham-Southern (11-11) beat a future league member on the road for the first time in six attempts since agreeing to join the league last season.
The homestanding Panthers trailed 59-39 with 13:06 to play, and proceeded to hold BSC scoreless for 10 minutes, 37 seconds. During that span, HPU scored 26 unanswered points to grab a 65-59 advantage on Doug Alves' three-pointer with 3:01 left.
But Birmingham-Southern stayed cool and scored the game's final nine points to claim the road victory. Trailing 65-64 with 28 seconds to play, T.R. Reed (who led all scorers with 22 points) drained two free throws to put BSC ahead 65-64.
High Point's Dustin Van Weerdhuizen was called for a charge as he drove to the hoop with 17 seconds remaining, and Rashard Willie made a pair of foul shots to ice the win.
Van Weerdhuizen (21 points) led three High Point players in double figures. Brent Halsch (12 points) and Joe Knight (10 points) also reached the plateau.
