In a battle of Panthers, High Point fought back with two second half goals from Tanner Wightman and Rick Hanson to defeat Birmingham-Southern, 2-1, Saturday night at Albion Millis Stadium.
Birmingham-Southern got on the board first with a goal in the 13th minute with a goal from Kenny Robinson. The goal was assisted by Thimo Langher.
With just over thirty minutes remaining, Birmingham-Southern received a red card and was forced to play a man down. High Point took advantage and scored two goals within the next ten minutes to secure the victory.
Wightman scored on a header off a cross from Kenzo Tochiki, while Hanson notched the game-winner off a service from goalkeeper Eric Lona. HPU outshot BSU 11-8.
The Panthers improve to 4-9-1 on the season, while Birmingham-Southern falls to 3-10-1. Since Birmingham-Southern is in its final season as a provisional NCAA Division I member, the game will not count in the Big South Conference standings.
HPU hosts UNC Asheville on Wednesday night. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm.
