Women's Soccer Battles Radford To 2-2 Draw

Wendy Williams and Jen Evans scored goals and the defense did the rest as High Point became the first Big South team this season to keep host Radford out of the win column with a 2-2 tie Saturday afternoon.

The Panthers (2-7-2, 0-2-2 Big South) took the Highlanders 8-1-1, 2-0-1) to overtime, where neither team could punch it into the net.

Radford would get on the board first when Nikki Porter settled a long cross from Erin Cozza, got herself free of a few defenders and rifled a shot past Panther keeper Katie Smith in the 17th minute.

Williams broke free from two defenders and placed the ball over RU's Samantha Woods in the 42nd minute to knot the game at 1-1.

The Panthers would take the lead in the 49th minute on a goal from Evans. She took a short cross in traffic from Williams and headed it into the net for a 2-1 advantage. But the Highlanders tied it up when senior Sarah Wicichowski getting put a loose ball off a Panther defender and into the back of the net in the 75th minute.

After no scoring opportunities in the first overtime, each team came with inches of victory. The Highlanders chance came in the 105th minute when Porter, off a cross from Jevne Reid, chipped the ball just over the left corner of the goal. Three minutes later Williams' header from about 10 yards went inches over the crossbar.

The Highlanders outshot the Panthers 16-9 while each team took three corners. Smith, making her third start of the season, made four saves.

HPU travels to Davidson for a 7:00 pm kickoff on Thursday.
