High Point's women's soccer team opened up its home schedule and Big South Conference slate with a huge win over conference favorite Liberty in front of nearly 400 fans at Albion Millis Stadium.
The Panthers picked up their first win of the season and upped their record to 1-2-1 overall, 1-0 in the Big South Conference, while the Flames fell to 1-3 on the season, 0-1 in the conference.
HPU got on the board early in the match, as freshman Kristen Kelly found the back of the net in the first five minutes of the match off an assist from freshman Carolyn Bard to give the Panthers a 1-0 lead. The match would stay that way through the first half, as the Panthers took the 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.
The Flames tied the match early in the second half, as senior Nancy Davis put Liberty on the board with a goal in the 48th minute of the match. The Panthers came back quickly, scoring almost five minutes later as Bader took the ball down the field and got it past sophomore keeper Amy Moxley to give HPU a lead it would not relinquish.
The Panthers got their final goal in the 66th minute, as sophomore Stephanie Moenter took the ball into the net for an unassisted goal over Moxley's head. The Flames got the match to 3-2 with seven minute left, as junior Emily Shubin scored on a rebound from senior keeper Cindy Watts to make it a 3-2 match.
The Flames outshot the Panthers 12-8, with Watts collecting four saves. The Flames also attempted five corner kicks, including three in a row in the first half, while HPU attempted only one.
"This was a hard-fought match between two very good teams," said Panthers head coach Tracie Foels. "I am very proud of this team and how well they played."
