Dustin Van Weerdhuizen scored 23 points and added 12 rebounds as High Point (3-3) held off a late Eastern Kentucky rally to top the Colonels, 70-60, at the Millis Center Tuesday night.
EKU (2-4) used a 9-0 run spread over both halves to grab a 29-28 lead on a layup by Richard Sadler with 18:42 to play. It was the first of ten lead changes in the final frame.
The Panthers battled back, though, behind Van Weerdhuizen and freshman Joe Knight (19 points), and got a layup and steal by Jay Wallace, followed by a quick layup from Knight, to turn a 47-46 squeaker into a 51-46 cushion with 7:02 to play.
High Point wouldn't trail again, although the Colonels made it interesting when Clinton Sims dunked off a steal with 3:02 to play to pull EKU within 58-56. But Brent Halsch broke free for a layup, and Van Weerdhuizen nailed a three to give HPU all the breathing room it would need.
Shawn Fields (15 points) was the only Colonel in double-figures. Sadler and Ben Rushing had nine points apiece.
