High Point Drops Heartbreaker to Coastal Carolina in Shootout, 5-4

After three hours and forty minutes of soccer, Coastal Carolina knocked off High Point in a shootout 5-4 to advance to the Big South Conference men's soccer championship.

The game couldn't be decided in regulation, as each team scored one goal. Then there was no decision after four 15 minute sudden-death overtimes, so the teams went to a shootout. Each team made four goals in the shootout, so it moved on to a sudden-death shootout. The first shot of the sudden-death shootout was taken by High Point goalkeeper Eric Lona, who pinged it off the right post. That set the stage for Baldur Knutsson, who made his shot to send the Chanticleers to the finals, where they later defeated Liberty to win the title and a berth in the NCAA Tournament.

Both teams battled to a 0-0 tie in the first half, and in the second half the Panthers struck first. High Point was awarded a corner kick and Luke Knor scored off a deflection for a 1-0 lead in the 80th minute. The lead was short lived as Coastal Carolina (9-7-3) bounced back with a goal just one minute and 33 seconds later. Joseph Ngwenya's pass set up Bobby Crovo all alone in front of the net and Crovo ripped the ball into the back of the net.

High Point was trying to make it two straight seasons that the No. 8 seed made it to the finals. The Panthers finish the season at 7-10-3. Junior goalkeeper Eric Lona and junior midfielder Barry Mitchell were each named to the All-Tournament team.
