For nearly three-fourths of the match, the High Point women's soccer team battled Conference USA power East Carolina toe-to-toe. But the visiting Pirates got seconds-half goals from Megan Stickler and Lauren Boucher to claim a 2-0 victory over the Panthers in a non-conference tilt at Albion Millis Stadium.
The Panthers (2-8-1, 1-4 Big South) weathered the early storm, and dodged a bullet in the 14th minute when midfielder Amanda Duffy, the Pirates' leading scorer, fired a shot off the post that bounced harmlessly away, and after an uneventful first half, High Point and ECU headed into intermission in a scoreless tie.
East Carolina (8-6, 4-2 Conference USA) kept the pressure in, and finally broke through in the 74th minute when Stickler redirected a cross from Mindy Nixon off a corner kick towards the net. It deflected off a Panther defender, broke the goal line, and gave the Pirates a 1-0 lead.
The Pirates would add an insurance goal minutes later when Boucher headed a Duffy corner kick past HPU keeper Ciny Watts in the 87th minute.
