HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University's
Makayla Grubb (women's golf) and
Jace Duckworth (men's golf) have been named the HPU Student-Athletes of the Month for September, presented by the Triad Talk Network.
Over three tournaments and nine rounds, Grubb is averaging a team-low 71.67 while making 33 birdies, placing 16th or higher in each event, and winning two Big South Conference Golfer of the Week accolades. She began September with a 3-over-par 216 (70-70-76) at the Golfweek Fall Challenge for 16th place.
The sophomore followed it up by earning medalist honors at the Lady Paladin Invitational with a 14-under par 202 (67-68-67), the lowest under-par score in the conference since the 2023 fall season. She won by four strokes and recorded the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history, while helping the team to runner-up finish. Grubb's first and final round 67s tied her collegiate low, and she set the school record for lowest 36-hole score (135).
In the final tournament of September, Grubb tied for 16th at the Fighting Irish Classic (par 71, 6,062 yards) with a seven-over par 220 (75-70-75). Her second round 70 was the Panthers' lone under-par round of the tournament, and she tied for the team-lead with eight birdies, which tied for 12th-most in the 81-player field that featured four Power 4 programs.
In Duckworth's first-ever tournament in the Purple and White, the junior transfer was named the individual runner-up at the Augusta Invitational helping guide the Panthers to a second-place team finish. He shot a 7-under-par 209 (71-67-71) over three rounds as his five-under-par 67 in round two matched his collegiate low. He tied for first in the 76-player field in par-5 scoring at 9-under, drained the second-most birdies with 17, and was 1-under on the par-4 layouts (tied for fifth). Following the season opening tournament, he was named the Big South Golfer of the Week.
At the Sandestin Intercollegiate, he placed fourth overall and led the Panthers with a 4-under-par 206 (67-69-70) and 14 birdies at the Raven Golf Club. He In Duckworth's most recent tournament at the Ironwood Collegiate Classic, he placed fifth overall for his third straight top-5 finish of the season after scoring a 5-under-par 211 (67, 69, 75) and leading the team in birdies for the third straight tournament with 12. He has recorded 43 birdies and five eagles in the nine rounds played thus far.
