Head Coach Aaron McGuiness: "From start to finish, it was probably our most productive game this season. It's a tough one to swallow, because I think it was an evenly matched game. I think if we were to walk out with a draw, it would have been a fair result. We didn't pick up the scraps on one of their shots, and we could have done a better job getting on the end of things in the box, and that's the difference.
The Phoenix came out firing with an early shot in the 10-minute mark that was fired from the top of the box.
Aubrey McKessy took a full leap and got her gloves on the ball to deflect it up and over the net. HPU came right back and answered with three shots of its own taken by
Peyton Gilmore and
Bella Burr who was responsible for a pair.
High Point and the Phoenix went to the half all square at zero. HPU had a few early chances to start the second half as
Faye Battersby, and
Abigail Dibble both got off a shot that had the looks of a goal but was saved by the keeper.
Elon would eventually work its way to a 1-0 advantage in the 77th minute as Jess Beck knocked one past McKessy off the rebound of the initial shot taken by Isa Murdock. High Point had a few late minute pushes to find the equalizer but just could not get something past the Phoenix.
Elon secured the 1-0 victory over High Point with the game winner that came in the 77th minute on Sunday night.
Up Next: High Point will head to UNC Greensboro on Thursday, September 4. Kick-off is set for 6:00 p.m.
