Panthers Dominate in Regular-Season Home Opener

HIGH POINT, N.C. — The High Point University Panthers men's basketball team took on the Averett University Cougars in a Saturday evening match up in what is the team's second regular-season match up, and first at home of the 2025-2026 campaign. The Panthers took down the Cougars 127-52, in what is Head Coach Flynn Clayman's first win at the helm inside the Qubein Center.

The final score sets the Panthers' new scoring high at the division one level and second-biggest scoring margin. Cam'Ron Fletcher led the way with a career-high 25 points, shooting 10-13 from the floor, and grabbed another nine rebounds.

High Point is coming off a dominant win against Furman University to open the season, in which the team excelled on both ends of the court.

Head Coach Flynn Clayman"The focus was coming out to really perform well. We really just try to focus on ourselves. We're going to play hard. We're going to play together. We're going to play tough defense. We're going to run. And that's what we did tonight."

The Panthers opened up the game by attacking the basket, forcing five fouls early. In the first seven minutes alone, the Panthers were already 8-9 from the free-throw line. Terry Anderson recorded his name on the box score early, making five of the three free throws, while Scotty Washington scored the other three.

The run began for the Panthers as Anderson went coast-to-coast with a layup and then he found Youssouf Singare, who slammed it home. Singare then made two free throws on the following possession to give the Panthers a 28-12 lead.

Owen Aquino made his presence known, going from one end to the other, and a behind-the-back dribble later, gave the Panthers an 18-point lead. Chase Johnston then brought the lead to 21 with his second three-pointer of the game.

The free throws kept coming for the Panthers after the seven-minute mark in the first half as they made 11-13 before the Cougars even attempted one.

The Panthers kept the ball rolling as Braden Hausen found Singare for another dunk. Conrad Martinez then hit a jumper of his own and Hausen dished out another assist, this time to Anderson, who slammed it home. The Panthers took a 55-22 lead heading into the break.

Fletcher opened up the second half with an alley-oop slam from Aquino. Then Rob Martin found the lane. Fletcher got fouled on a layup in which his jersey got pulled down.

High Point kept playing its game and expanded its lead to 72-31 before the first media timeout of the second half.

Coming out of the timeout, the Panthers kept the momentum going. Johnston drilled a three-pointer in which Martinez assisted. The Panthers stayed consistent from the charity stripe in which it contributed once again. The Panthers were up 92-35 with just under 12 minutes to play.

Martin found Fletcher for an amazing dunk and one of the best plays anyone will see in college basketball this season. Off the fast break, Martinez bounce passed a cross court dart to Martin who attacked the basket and flipped a no look lob up for Fletcher to slam home.

The Panthers hit the century mark on a Hausen deep three to go up 101-41. Fletcher then hit his career-high on another dunk. Hausen found Caden Miller on an alley-oop dunk for the freshman's first collegiate points.

Babacar Diallo made his presence known with five points of his own, including a successful three-point play. High Point capitalized on Averett's turnovers to take a 117-46 lead with under four minutes to play. A behind-the-back pass from Miller assisted on David Fonville's first field goal of the game. The Panthers went on to win 127-52 as Head Coach Flynn Clayman won his first game inside the Qubein Center.

Anderson totaled 16 points, three rebounds and three assists. Johnston finished with 12 points, Washington and Martinez both put up 11 points, while Singare finished with 10.

In total, the Panthers recorded 70 deflections, 22 steals, and forced 30 turnovers. On fast break points, the Panthers outscored the Cougars 56-8. Six Panthers scored in double-digits while 13 players scored overall.
