HIGH POINT, N.C. — For the second Thursday in a row, the High Point University women's soccer team is leaving Vert Stadium with a shutout victory as the Panthers retrieved the 2-0 shutout win over UMBC.
SITE: Vert Stadium
SCORE: High Point 2, UMBC 0
RECORDS: High Point (3-4-1), UMBC (2-4)
Head Coach Aaron McGuiness: "It was nice to see a score so quickly tonight, kind of takes the pressure off and it takes a wind out of their sails a bit. But I think as the game progressed, we became a little complacent and allowed them to get into the game a little bit, where we should have put more intensity into it and that was the message at half time to control every aspect of the game. We have given our best these past few games and it has been serving us really well."
Less than two minutes in,
Tessa Carlin scored as the graduate student netted her second goal in as many games. The forward took the assist from defender
Alex DePerno and lifted it over the UMBC keeper to take a quick 1-0 lead.
It was an advantage the Panthers never lost as the defense hushed the Retrievers, limiting them to only one shot on goal and none in the second half. HPU had 14 shots with five on goal to dominate the shot category, while the reigning Big South Defensive Player of the Week
Aubrey McKessy registered her third clean sheet.
Meg Roden added an insurance goal after a corner attempt from
Courtney Andruczk bounced around the box. Andruczk regained possession and flicked it to Roden as the sophomore midfielder fired it from the left side and into the right corner side to go up 2-0.
It was Roden's second goal and Andruczk's first assist to put the finishing touches on at the 64th minute mark.
Up Next: The Panthers head to Elon for a Triad rivalry matchup on Sunday, Sept. 15 at 7 p.m.
