HIGH POINT, N.C. — This Week in High Point University Athletics, track and field heads to Liberty for its final regular season meet while baseball takes on Wake Forest at home before heading to South Carolina to face off against USC Upstate in a three-game series. Men's and women's lacrosse head into their respective conference championship tournaments this weekend. Men's lacrosse will first take on Richmond scheduled to start on Thursday while women's lacrosse is paired up with Furman Friday night. 

Track and Field

HPU saw a busy weekend as the team competed at the Charlotte Invitational and the Virginia High Performance Meet. At the Charlotte Invitational, Letzia Jessica Marsico broke the program record in the women's shot put after throwing 14.56 meters for second place. For running events, Brianna Malone posted a 2:08.73 800m time to take second. In the women's 5000m race, Charli Montalvo ran a 16:55.36 to place fifth overall, while Olive Allen ran a 17:07.63 to cross the finish line in seventh place. For the men's 5000m race, Othmane El Gharissi took home first-place with a 13:50.42 time. El Gharissi also competed in the men's 1500m race with Reuben Kosche. El Gharissi finished third with a time of 3:55.57 while Kosche finished fourth with a time of 3:55.90. 

In the field events, Sydney Koker placed fourth in the high jump with a 1.70m mark, while Andrew Taylor represented the men and cleared 2.05m for fourth. Reid Holloway represented the Panthers in the pole vault, as he cleared 5.23m for an outdoor personal best to place fourth. Auriane Viola represented the women in the pole vault. Viola cleared 4.05m to place sixth. 

Only one athlete attended the Virginia High Performance this past weekend. Chris Van Neikerk represented the Panthers in the men's discus, where he threw 51.14m to place sixth.

HPU last hit the field for a difficult three-game series battle against Mercer University. The Bears took a strong start with two runs in the third. High Point countered with a home run in the fifth inning, hit by Brayden Simpson, but the Panthers couldn't quite come back, resulting in a Bears victory for game one, 4-3. The Panthers came back in game two, going on a 4-0 run in the first four innings. Cael Chatham sealed the deal with a homer seventh inning for a 7-1 victory. Matt Little took the win for a 5-2 record. HPU dropped game three against the Bears, 8-0, resulting in Mercer taking the series, 2-1.

Wake Forest University last stepped on the field to take on Notre Dame in an ACC face-off. The Demon Deacons took game one with a narrow 4-3 victory. The Fighting Irish came back with a vengeance for the next two games, taking both, 3-11, and 8-7, respectively. Notre Dame won the weekend against Wake Forest, 2-1. 

High Point last battled Wake Forest in late March this year. Wake Forest took a strong start, leading 4-1 after three innings. The Panthers couldn't catch up, resulting in a Demon Deacons victory, 7-3. HPU has battled Wake Forest 50 times and won 14 since the first game in 2000.

USC Upstate last played Presbyterian College in a three-game series. The Blue Hose narrowly took the first game 10-9, but Upstate came back to claim game two, 5-3. After a difficult battle in the third and final game, Presbyterian emerged victorious, 10-8, winning the series, 2-1.

High Point last faced off against Upstate last March. HPU took a strong two-run lead in the first inning, HPU maintained its lead until the sixth inning when Upstate hit a hot streak and took the lead, resulting in a Panther loss, 8-6. HPU has faced Upstate 17 times and won five games against the Spartans since the first matchup in 2008. 

Men's Lacrosse

High Point University will face off against the University of Richmond for the Panthers' first game of the A10 Championship, hosted by the University of Massachuesettes. If HPU wins its game against Richmond, the Panthers will face off against the winner of St. Joseph's University and UMass. 

HPU last stepped on the field to take on the University of Massachuesettes. High Point sprinted out to an early 6-0 lead in the first quarter. The Minutemen managed to get on the board in the second quarter, but High Point stayed ahead, ending the half with a 9-3 advantage. In the second half, UMass took a 4-0 run to get within three goals, but the Panthers stepped up with a 4-0 run of their own to take the dub, 17-10. Jack VanOverbeke led the team in goals and assists with three each. Brayden Mayea also secured a hat trick during the game and led the team in ground balls with five. Tyler Baird was hot on Mayea's tail with four ground balls, while Jack Sawyer showed up with two goals and two assists. Zack Overend secured the cage for most of the game, clocking 11 saves throughout the game. 

University of Richmond last stepped on the field to take on St. Joseph's University. Both teams struggled in the first half as the game was tied 3-3 when the two teams broke for intermission. After a quiet first half, both teams started to heat up in the third as Richmond hit a three-goal streak before St. Joseph's popped off with a 6-0 run for a 9-6 advantage with 10 minutes remaining in regulation. Richmond worked to catch up, but couldn't score the equalizer, resulting in a St. Joseph's victory, 10-9. 

High Point fell to Richmond when the two teams met in the regular season, 9-5. High Point has taken four of the 17 games played against Richmond since the first in 2014. 

Women's Lacrosse

High Point takes on Furman University in the semifinal round, which is hosted in Macon, Ga., with the winner to take on the winner of Mercer versus Longwood. 

HPU defeated Longwood University last time the Panthers hit the field. High Point hit a 9-0 run in the first half for a 13-5 advantage heading into intermission. HPU continued to dominate after the break, winning the game by a whopping 21-8. Jordan Miles led the team with four goals, three assists, two draw controls, and a ground ball. Allie Connally was hot with four goals as well, one assist, and four draw controls. Mandy Brockamp led the team with three assists. Brockamp also secured one goal and two ground balls. Joy Coffey and Ava Welsh split time in the cage. Coffey secured four saves while Welsh clocked two. 

Furman University last hit the field to face off against Gardner-Webb University. The game was a tight battle as Furman trailed by only one heading into the final quarter. The Bulldogs added to their lead before Furman hit a hot streak with three goals in a row to take the victory, 12-11. 

High Point last took on Furman in late April. HPU had a strong 4-1 start in the first quarter, which the Panthers maintained throughout the game to take the victory, 13-10. HPU has faced off against Furman five times and only lost once since the first game in 2018.
