HIGH POINT, N.C. — This Week in High Point University Athletics, baseball takes on three competitors in five games. Men's and women's lacrosse hosts their regular-season finales at home as the women take on Longwood in a mid-week matchup while the men host UMass on Friday. Track and field rounds out the week at the Charlotte Invitational before heading north to Virginia for a Sunday meet.

HPU last stepped on the field to take on Presbyterian College in a three-game series. The Blue Hose had a strong start with back-to-back home runs, but the Panthers evened the score as Peyton Carr knocked one out of the park to send Cael Chatham home. HPU held its momentum into the second inning as Eric Grintz hit a home run to take High Point's first lead of the game. After a quiet third inning, Presbyterian evened the score with a double, but the Panthers were quick to respond as Brayden Simpson hit one home to score Grintz and Miggy Echazarreta for a three-run lead. High Point's momentum didn't stop as the Panthers dominated throughout the remaining innings. The game ended with a Panther victory, 13-3. Gus Hughes was the winning pitcher of the night, pushing his record to 5-4. Game two was a home run party for the Panthers as Adam Stuart knocked one out of the park while Grintz and Carr hit two each over the fence. HPU took game two, 15-7. Brett Wozniak took the dub, giving him his sixth win of the season. High Point cooled down on the home runs in game three as Cael Chatham was the only one to hit one out of the park. Despite this, the Panthers still dominated the Blue Hose, taking game three, 10-6, and the series, 3-0. Matt Little pitched the final game for the Panthers and picked up his fourth win of the season. 

Queens University of Charlotte had a difficult matchup this past weekend against Kennesaw State University. Queens took an early lead in the first half of game one, but Kennesaw bounced back, taking the game 6-5. The Royals performed much better in game two as they sprinted out to a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning. Kennesaw managed to get on the board in the fifth, but couldn't stop Queens' momentum, leading to a Royals victory, 15-5. Queens fought hard in game three as the two teams traded runs. Kennesaw found an edge in the ninth, scoring three runs to take the victory, 11-8, and the series, 2-1. 

High Point has only played Queens once before which occurred earlier this month. The Panthers took the victory after an electric fourth inning, 6-3. 

University of North Carolina Greensboro last stepped on the field to play Radford University. The Spartans dropped the first game to the Highlanders but came back with a vengeance in games two and three. After taking game two, 9-6, UNCG decimated the Highlanders in seven innings, winning the game, 17-1, and taking the series, 2-1. 

High Point last played UNCG in early March. The Spartans found an early eight-run lead which they used to coast to victory, 13-7. The Panthers have played UNCG 41 times, winning 13 games, since the first matchup in 2000.

Mercer University last hit the field to face off against Wofford College. Both teams were tied 1-1 after nine innings in game one. After playing a couple more, Wofford popped off with seven runs to win the game, 9-2. Game two was close as well with both teams entering the ninth tied 8-8. Mercer managed to prevail, scoring a run at the bottom of the ninth to take game two, 9-8. Game three of the series was canceled, resulting in a tie between Wofford and Mercer, 1-1. 

High Point has played Mercer six times since the first game in 2012. Mercer narrowly took the victory, 4-3, the last time these two teams met back in 2014. High Point has secured two wins over the Bears. 

Women's Lacrosse

HPU last stepped on the field to take on Furman University. HPU sprinted to a 4-1 lead in the first, holding the lead through the second to end the half with a 7-4 advantage. Furman tried to catch up in the second half, but High Point stayed one step ahead, taking the game, 13-10. Esprit Cha led the team with four goals. Shannon Smith wasn't far behind with a hat trick and an assist as Jordan Miles had two goals and 13 draw controls. Allie Connally secured a couple of goals and a pair of assists while Pia Cavallaro and Ava Welsh led the team in ground balls with both having three. Welsh and Joy Coffey split time in the net. Welsh secured three saves while Coffey clocked two. 

Longwood University also went head-to-head with Furman last time out. Longwood took the advantage in the first with a 5-2 lead. Furman bounced back in the second, ending the half down by two. The two teams traded goals in the second half, eventually tying the game at 16 with 2 minutes remaining. In the final 15 seconds, Furman managed to slip a goal in, leading to a Furman victory, 17-16. 

The last time High Point and Longwood met, HPU dominated in the first quarter taking an 8-1 lead. The Panthers continued to hold their lead, winning the game 20-14. HPU has gone head-to-head with Longwood 15 times since the first game in 2011. The Panthers have never lost a game to the Lancers and currently hold a 15-game win streak.

Men's Lacrosse

HPU last stepped on the field to take on Hobart College. Hobart took an early lead, 3-2 after the first quarter. The Panthers found their momentum in the second, going on a 6-0 run that spilled into the third for an 8-4 advantage. HPU maintained its lead as Hobart attempted a comeback, but the Statesmen fell short, leading to a Panther dub, 11-10. Everyone put work in against Hobart as three Panthers led the team with two goals (Brayden Mayea, Ian Cann, Matt Lutzel). Jack VanOverbeke once again led the Panthers in assists with three. VanOverbeke also managed to score a goal and led the team in ground balls with six. Mayea and Luca Accardo were close behind with five ground balls each. Zack Overend spent the game in the net, clocking 13 saves throughout the game. 

The University of Massachusetts last hit the field to face off against No. 14 University of Richmond. The Spiders started strong with a 4-1 lead in the first. UMass bounced back in the second with a 6-1 run for a 7-5 lead to end the half. Richmond bounced back quickly after the break with a 7-1 run to reclaim the lead. UMass attempted to come back in the fourth, but fell short, leading to a Spider victory, 14-12.

High Point has only played UMass once before a year ago in April. Massachusetts took an early 5-1 start. HPU attempted to catch up, but fell short in the fourth, leading to a UMass victory 12-10.

After adventuring far across the United States, HPU stayed close to home this past weekend to compete in the Wake Forest Invitational. Lindsay Cooper kicked things off for the Panthers, posting a new 400m hurdles program record with a time of 58.41 to take first. A'lajuwan Robinson and Deron Dudley placed in the top three, posting times of 20.88 and 21.12 to place second and third, respectively. 

In field events, Sydney Koker represented High Point in the high jump, clearing 1.65m to place fourth overall. In the men's pole vault, Reid Holloway and Maxwell Robinson finished in the top 5. Holloway cleared a height of 5.12m while Robinson cleared 4.82m. On the women's side, Auriane Viola cleared 3.91m and placed fourth overall. Chris Van Niekerk closed out the meet with a second-place finish in the men's shot put after throwing 18.37m.
