HIGH POINT, N.C. — This Week in High Point University athletics, women's golf has a three day tournament at Golfweek Caledonia while Baseball takes on Appalachian State University before confronting Big South foe, UNC Asheville in a three game series this weekend. Women's lacrosse takes on a pair of Big South competitors while men's lacrosse and track and field both host senior days. Men's golf rounds out the week at a Power 5 tournament hosted by Indiana University.

High Point University enters its final regular-season golf tournament of the year before the Big South Conference Tournament. Golfweek is the perfect opportunity for the Panthers to prepare for the Big South Conference Tournament as a few Big South teams will be in attendance including the University of South Carolina Upstate, Winthrop University, and the University of North Carolina Asheville. Anna Howerton will hold the one spot in the lineup, followed by Ella Perna, Maddie Hensley, Julia McLaughlin, and Danielle Suh to round out the lineup. Ana-Elena Kusters will also be attending as an individual.

HPU secured its first sweep this past weekend against Radford University. The first game was tight with both teams heading into the ninth inning with one on the board. Cael Chatham had homered one in the fourth for the Panthers, while Radford had hit one over the fence in the sixth to be all tied up. Chatham stepped up to bat in the ninth and doubled the ball down the infield line to send Miggy Echazarreta home and take the first game, 2-1. Pitcher Noah Carter managed to pick up his first win of the season. High Point hit a hot streak in the second game with the help of Echazarreta knocking one out of the park, assisting the Panthers to a 14-4 victory. Brett Wozniak picked up his third win as a pitcher this season in game two. Matt Little picked up his second win on the mound in game three, toughing out the entire game to take the final win, 3-2, sweeping Radford, 3-0. 

Appalachian State University last hit the field in a three game series against Marshall University. After dropping the first game, App State came back strong, winning game two 15-10, with the help of pitcher Zach Lewis, who picked up his first win of the season. The Mountaineers were strong once again in game three, dominating the Herd, 19-2, as Jackson Steensma picked up his third win. Appalachian State won the series, 2-1. 

High Point has played Appalachian State 26 times and picked up seven wins against the Mountaineers since the first matchup in March of 2000. Last time out, the Panthers dropped the game against App State, 7-1.

UNC Asheville had a difficult three game series against USC Upstate this past weekend as Upstate swept the Bulldogs 3-0. After dropping the first game, 14-4, Asheville got back on its feet with three homers in game two, but couldn't quite topple the Spartans, narrowly falling, 10-9. Game three was another close one with the help of a couple Bulldog homers, but once again Asheville couldn't quite rise past Upstate, dropping game three, 7-6. 

High Point has played an enormous 73 games against Asheville, winning 48 since the first matchup in 2000. Last time out, Asheville managed to hit a hot streak in the eighth inning to take the game, 9-6.

HPU last hit the field for its conference opener against Mercer University. The game was tight with the lead changing hands a couple times. The Panthers had a solid start, leading 4-2 in the first, but the Bears bounced back to hold a one-point lead heading into the fourth. Mercer scored four goals in the final 15 minutes to take the game, 13-10. Despite the loss, Allie Connally had a solid game, securing her third straight multi-score game and her fourth this season. Connally also found a career-high of five draw controls while Jordan Miles secured a career-high as well with seven. Esprit Cha had a great game as well, leading the team in ground balls with four and finding a career-high of six caused turnovers. 

Winthrop went up against Radford this past weekend. The Highlanders popped off in the first, keeping Winthrop off the board entirely for a 5-0 lead. Winthrop started to work its way back in the second, ending the half down two. The second half was a close battle, with Radford out-scoring Winthrop by only one goal, but Winthrop couldn't quite bounce back, leading to a Highlanders victory, 11-8. 

High Point has faced off against Winthrop 16 times, winning 13 of the matchups since the first in 2013. Last time out, the Panthers were pushed to overtime after the Eagles scored six goals in the fourth to tie the game. High Point didn't let the comeback phase them and managed to score the only goal of overtime to take the game, 13-12. 

Gardner-Webb University last played Furman University. Furman popped off immediately, hitting a 7-0 run in the first, which spilled into the second for a 10-3 advantage. Gardner-Webb worked to come back, scoring three goals in a row, but Furman continued to dominate, taking the game, 21-9. 

Last time High Point went up against Gardner-Webb, the Panthers hit a hot streak in the second half, scoring five in each quarter while holding the Bulldogs to three for the half to take the game 15-9. The Panthers have gone head-to-head with Gardner-Webb nine times since 2015 and have yet to lose a game. 

Track and Field

Senior Day


HPU will host the VertKlasse Meeting this weekend following a hefty three-meet weekend the Panthers saw this past week. Part of the team went to Texas for either the Bobcat Invitational or the Texas Relays while the other half went to Raleigh for the Raleigh Relays. 

At the Texas Relays, Deron Dudley pulled out an impressive win against Power 5 competitors with a time of 10.13. Andrew Taylor also attended competing in section B of the high jump. Taylor posted a new outdoor record of 2.11m to place ninth in his section. 

Nearby at the Bobcat Invitational, Karlea Duhon showed up and showed out with a third place finish in the javelin throw with a mark of 40.35m. On the men's side, Shaun Thomas also found a third place finish, clearing 2.06m. 

In Raleigh, Katie Taylor broke the women's 10000m race record with a time of 33:41.37 to finish the first night.  Othmane El Gharissi also set a program record in the men's 5000m with a time of 13:53.64. Kyle Spencer ran with him and clocked a person best of 14:45.77.

HPU last hit the field to face off against Saint Joseph's University for the team's A-10 opener. SJU had a great start with three consecutive goals. Saint Joseph's continued to score well, eventually taking the game, 15-7. Matt Lutzel lead the Panthers in goals with a pair while Jack VanOverbeke led in assists with three. Luca Accardo found a whopping six ground balls and Brayden Mayea was right on his tail with four. 

St. Bonaventure University last played Richmond University. The Spiders had a stellar start with a 9-1 run in the first that spilled into the second. At the end of the first half, Richmond had secured a 14-4 lead over St. Bonaventure. The Spiders eased up in the second half, only scoring five goals in the two quarters, but St. Bonaventure still couldn't topple Richmond, resulting in a Spiders victory, 19-8. 

High Point has played St. Bonaventure three times since the first matchup five years ago and has yet to lose a game. Last time out, the Panthers dominate in the first half, scoring seven and five goals in the first and second quarters, respectively. St. Bonaventure couldn't keep up, resulting in a High Point dub, 17-8. 

Men's Golf

HPU enters another Power 5 tournament late this week at the Hoosier Intercollegiate, hosted by Indiana University. Gregor Meyer holds the one spot in the lineup, followed by Grady Newton, Fred Roberts IV, Charlie Barr, and Miller Carr
