HPU Wraps Up Two Day Meet With a Few Broken Records

BLACKSBURG, Va. — High Point University's Cole Wilson and Brianna Malone broke a couple program records, while Reid Holloway tied a program best as the track and field team wrapped up another two-day indoor meet Saturday evening at Virginia Tech's Doc Hale Invitational. 

Wilson opened the meet in the pentathlon with a few PRs and a broken program record. Wilson PR'd in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.50 and the shot put with a mark of 13.31m for a record-breaking total of 5,419 points.

Competing on the women's side was Ava Bugenhagen who managed to secure several PRs in the Pentathlon as well. Bugenhagen PR'd in the 800m with a time of 2:31.17, the long jump with a mark of 4.43m, and shot put with a mark of 8.42m. All together, the freshman scored a career-high point total of 2,707 for a 6th place finish.

Andrew Taylor and Chris Van Niekerk represented High Point in field events. Taylor represented HPU in the high jump, where he secured a mark of 2.15m, while Van Niekerk competed in the shot put where he threw a mark of 18.46m. Both Taylor and Van Niekerk secured a second-place finish in their respective events. 

Aiden Soto kicked off the running events on Saturday in the 800m with a new PR time of 1:55.04 to place 9th overall. 

Malone represented the women in the 800m race. Malone posted a time of 2:07.97 to set a new program record and place fourth overall. Nikki Frail also competed in the 800m and finished seven seconds behind Malone to place in the top-10. Later in the day, both Malone and Frail, along with teammates Olive Allen and Joanna Poland, posted an 8th place finish in the 4x400m with a time of 3:57.65. 

Sydney Horn, Rachel Vesper, and Auriane Viola represented the Panthers in the pole vault. Horn posted a fourth-place finish with a mark of 4.39m, while Vesper and Viola placed eighth and ninth, respectively, both with a mark of 4.09m. 

For the men, Holloway secured a new PR in pole vault with a mark of 5.22m, which tied the program's previous best, to place in the top-5. 

Up Next: The Panthers travel to Nashville, Tenn., for another two-day meet at the Music City Invitational next weekend Feb. 9-10.
