HIGH POINT, N.C. — The High Point University women's soccer team played to a 1-1 Big South Conference draw with Gardner-Webb University Wednesday night.
SITE: Vert Stadium
SCORE: High Point 1, Gardner-Webb 1
RECORDS: High Point (4-4-3, 1-0-1), Gardner-Webb (2-8-3, 0-1-2)
Head Coach Aaron McGuiness: "We needed to be more clinical in front of the goal. They scored on something that we had identified as their danger point and we weren't good enough in that key moment and in that set piece. We all recognize that and we know we need to be better. We live, learn and grow from it. We will be better."
In the 68th minute, the Panthers broke a scoreless match when
Sabba Haghgoo chested in a cross from
Kasey Resker into the right corner. It was a breakthrough HPU had been looking for all night as the home team out-shot the Runnin' Bulldogs by 23 shots.
The freshmen, Haghgoo and Resker, both started the second half after not being in the initial starting lineup. It was Haghgoo's second goal of the season and Resker's second assist.
Gardner-Webb matched the Panthers' goal a minute later after a foul resulted in a set piece. The Runnin' Bulldogs perfected it as Julianna Jatkola headed it off the free kick to Lily Stegall, who slipped it in past
Aubrey McKessy. It was McKessy's first goal allowed since September 8 at UNC Wilimington.
It was the lone shot on goal from Gardner-Webb as the Panthers had 13 targeted between the cross bars. Runnin' Bulldogs' keeper Stephanie Liu had 12 saves with many that were impressive to keep the Panthers searching for more.
Haghgoo had the lone goal, but had other quality looks on goal as did
Emily Mashinski,
Peyton Gilmore,
Tessa Carlin and
Lindsey DeHaven. Freshman
Caroline Dewey made her debut at centre-back.
Up Next: The Panthers head to Winthrop for a road match on Tuesday, Oct. 8 at 3 p.m.
