HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The High Point University women's soccer team came up short in its first of a three-match road trip as Marshall University edged the Panthers, 1-0, on a muggy Sunday afternoon.

Head coach Aaron McGuiness: "We did well controlling the game in the first half and had a few opportunities that we need to put away. In the second half, we were unfortunate to go down to 10 players early on and to be scored on from that foul. I'm extremely proud of our players' response to this adversity and the character we showed to keep taking the game to them. We were unlucky not to equalize towards the end."
HPU showed a lot of heart and want to play for each other Sunday, especially when a true test hit the team two minutes into the second half.
After a scoreless first 45 minutes, The Herd attacked the Panthers with a pair of quick shots right of out the break. HPU denied the first, but then had an unlucky run on the next as
Ella Vaughn got tangled up with the Marshall player on a breakaway to issue a red card and free kick outside the box.
Bailey Fisher converted the free kick at the 47th-minute to put Marshall ahead, 1-0. It was a deficit HPU couldn't overcome, but the Panthers sure did try. Even with 10 players on the field, HPU outshot The Herd (17-9) with six being on target to Marshall's two.
Lindsey DeHaven was a menace all day, piling up a single-game career high seven shots with a massive one coming in the final minutes. The junior midfielder fired a bullet that keeper Alexis Wolgemuth, who had six saves, just got a finger on to save. Another scoring opportunity came late when DeHaven put a header on a ball that came into the box, missing the net by inches of the left post.
Tessa Carlin also had three shots, all being on goal, while
Leah Malone and
Gianna Simon contributed shots to give the Panthers chances.
Ellyn Casto received her first start in the Purple & White as she allowed one goal and collected a save.
Up Next: HPU will continue its road trip with a short bus ride to UNC Greensboro Wednesday at 7 p.m.
