HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point University men's and women's golf rounds out their fall seasons at UNCG and Mercer, respectively. Men's soccer celebrates Senior Night in its last game before the Big South Conference Tournament, while women's soccer starts its postseason  play against USC Upstate in the Big South semifinals. Volleyball looks to continue its sweep streak with two Big South matchups at home and Senior Day on Saturday, while men's and women's basketball start their season in the Qubein Center Friday and Saturday night.

In the last tournament at the Furman Invitational, the Panthers collected a top-10 finish. Heading into the fall's final tournament, HPU will have the same lineup for the Bryan National Collegiate as it did for Furman. Gregor Meyer holds the first spot in the roster followed by Burch Harrison, Grady Newton, Fred Roberts, and Charlie Barr. Freshman Jay Smith will be the individual.

Last time out, High Point competed at the Charlotte Invitational, where the Panthers took home the runner-up trophy led by sophomore Ella Perna's second-place finish. HPU heads into its final fall tournament with the same starting five led by Perna and followed by Anna Howerton, Maddie Hensley, Julia McLaughlin, and Danielle Suh

Last time HPU stepped on the field, the team was matched up against No. 14 University of Virginia. The first half relatively quiet as both teams struggled to score, with Virginia taking three shots in the first half, while High Point took five. Although HPU out-shot its opponent, Virginia secured the first goal of the night at the 31st minute. After intermission, the Cavaliers went straight to work, scoring their second goal less than a minute into the half, before scoring again six minutes later, pushing the score to 3-0. High Point responded at the 59th minute with a goal of its own; however, the Panthers were unable to secure more points leading to a HPU loss, 3-1.

Winthrop University last played University of North Carolina Asheville. Asheville came out firing, scoring the first goal of the night in the 4th minute. The game was quiet for the rest of the half as both teams were unable to score, despite UNCA taking 12 shots and Winthrop attempting nine. After intermission, both teams attempted to score, but neither side was successful. The game begin drawing to a close with only 15 minutes left when Winthrop secured the equalizer. The Bulldogs, however, couldn't settle for a tie and responded two minutes later with a second goal in the 77th minute. As Asheville secured the lead, the team knew it couldn't give Winthrop the opportunity to tie up the game with another goal, so the Bulldogs went to work and scored a third goal in the 82nd minute. Asheville won against Winthrop 3-1. 

High Point last played Winthrop in September of last year. Winthrop came out firing, scoring the first goal of the game in less than five minutes of play. High Point attempted to respond with a goal of its own, taking nine shots in the first half, however the Panthers were unable to maneuver the ball into the goal. After intermission, HPU went to work, scoring its first goal of the night at the 57th minute before scoring again just two minutes later to take the lead. Winthrop attempted to stop the Panthers, but High Point kept firing scoring a third goal at the 73rd minute. The game started to wind down with five minutes left of the game when HPU scored its fourth goal to put the game away 4-1. High Point has played Winthrop 28 times and holds a 13-12-3 against the Eagles.

Women's Soccer

HPU last faced off against UNC Asheville in the final conference matchup before the Big South Tournament. High Point came to play, working quickly to score in the first 10 minutes of play. Less than 15 minutes later, the Panthers struck again, doubling their score at the 22nd minute. Asheville attempted to catch up, taking four shot attempts in the first half, but the score stood 2-0 as the two teams broke for intermission. After halftime, Asheville went to work taking three shots in the first 15 minutes of the half in an attempt to catch up to High Point's lead, but their attempts were futile. The game ended with a Panther victory, 2-0, to round out regular-season play on a high note for HPU. 

University of South Carolina Upstate last played Charleston Southern University in its final Big South matchup before the conference tournament. Upstate got on the board first with a goal in the 27th minute. Charleston Southern quickly responded with a goal of its own 10 minutes later, pushing the score to 1-1 heading into intermission. The second half was tense as both teams battled to take the lead with Upstate committing seven fouls in an attempt to take the upper hand. With 10 minutes remaining, it looked like the game would end in a tie, until Charleston Southern shot and scored in the 86th minute to take the lead and secure the victory over Upstate, 2-1. 

High Point has played Upstate a total of seven times and only lost two since their first matchup in 2008. The Panthers last saw the Spartans earlier this year. Upstate scored in the 20th minute to take the lead. High Point worked hard to secure the equalizer, raining down 12 shots on the Spartans in the first half, but unfortunately, the Panthers were unsuccessful and the score remained 1-0 as the game halted for halftime. After intermission, High Point kept putting pressure on Upstate, taking six shots in the second compared to the Spartan's two, but the Panthers couldn't land the ball in the net, leading to an HPU loss, 1-0.

HPU last played Winthrop University where the team secured its 11th straight sweep and remains undefeated in the conference. The Panthers decimated the Eagles, holding the team to less than 17 points in each set. The first set started out with the two teams exchanging points until HPU pulled away with an 8-0 run before securing the first set 25-11. High Point took an early lead in the second set, 6-1, before Winthrop warmed up and prevented HPU from extending its lead. The score stood 13-17 with the Panthers maintaining the lead when they broke out a 9-1 run to secure the second set, 25-14. The Eagles battled back in the third, tying the game up at 5's before HPU went on a 6-1 run to take the lead. Winthrop desperately tried to recover, but to no avail, leading to High Point taking the set 25-16, sweeping the Eagles 3-0. 

Charleston Southern last played Upstate Saturday afternoon. CSU took the early lead in the matchup, barely claiming the first set 25-23. The Spartans became furious heading into the second set and massacred the Buccaneers, holding them to under 10 points in the second and securing the set 25-9. Upstate's wrath didn't end there as the team took the third and fourth set, 25-17 and 25-19, respectively, to secure the victory over Charleston Southern, 3-1. 

High Point last saw Charleston Southern earlier this month when HPU held the Buccaneers to under 20 points throughout the game and swept them away, contributing to the Panther's undefeated conference streak. High Point went on a 6-1 run early in the first set to take the lead 7-2. After exchanging a few points, HPU took another 6-1 run to further extend its lead before claiming the set, 25-17. The Panthers and Bucs exchanged points early in the second set, tying up the game four times before HPU started to pull away and take the set 25-17. CSU wasn't ready to give up as the two teams started the third match by exchanging points before High Point started to pull away, once again. Charleston Southern tried to stay within reach as the set hit the halfway point, 14-12, but HPU pulled out a 7-0 run before putting the set away 25-15, sweeping the Buccaneers. The Panthers have played Charleston Southern 49 times and only lost eight games to the Bucs since the first matchup in 1999. 

Presbyterian College last played Asheville. The Blue Hose dominated the Asheville in the first set, 25-11, and it looked like Presbyterian would get a quick sweep from its adversary, but the Bulldogs had other plans. Asheville came out firing in the second and third set, taking both 25-21. Presbyterian tried to fight back in the fourth, but to no avail, dropping the set 25-18, falling to the Bulldogs 3-1. 

High Point last played the Blue Hose earlier this month. HPU took an early lead, 9-2, and attempted to extend the lead further, but Presbyterian caught up and tied the game at 17's. The Panthers quickly took a 6-0 run to reclaim their lead before putting the set away, 25-19.  The two opponents exchanged points in the second, tying up the game at 9's before High Point took a 6-1 run to capture the lead. The two teams continued to exchange points, but Presbyterian couldn't hack away and HPU's lead. The Panthers took the second set 25-17. The two teams exchanged points and short runs in the third until the score sat 20-14 with HPU in the lead. The Blue Hose took a 4-point run to cut High Point's lead down to two, however, High Point responded with a run of its own straight to the 25th point to claim the set 25-18, sweeping Presbyterian. High Point has played Presbyterian 27 times since the first matchup in 2007, and has only lost four games to the Blue Hose. 

Women's Basketball

HPU last stepped on the court to compete against Clemson University in the first round of the Women's National Invitational Tournament a year ago. Clemson took the lead in the first quarter, going on an 8-0 run before ending the quarter with a 10-point lead over HPU, 21-11. The second quarter started with another Clemson run, but High Point chipped away at its lead with a three-point shot from Skyler Curran, who broke 1,700 career points with the make. The Tigers quickly responded, furthering their lead, 38-26, heading into halftime. In the third quarter, both teams went back and forth adding points to the board. HPU attempted to trim Clemson's lead down, but the Panthers were unsuccessful. Jordan Edwards kicked off the fourth quarter with a deep three-pointer, but the Panthers couldn't keep the momentum to hack away at the Tiger's lead, leading to a Panther loss, 66-46. 

Barton College last went up against Chowan University. The game was a nail-biter through the first half as Barton barely maintained the lead 35-33, however Chowan came back to the court after the break ready to break down Barton's lead. With five minutes left in the game, Chowan secured a layup and took the lead for good, 56-55, before ending the matchup with a win over Barton, 69-60. 

High Point has played Barton a total of 11 times since the first matchup in 1994, which was the only game the Panthers lost to Barton. The last time these two teams saw each other was back in 2017. High Point took the early lead by four points in the first quarter, which the Panthers extended to a five-point lead, 37-32, as the game paused for halftime. After intermission, HPU extended its lead to 12 points, before Barton cut it down to eight with three minutes left in the game. The Panthers weren't going to let Barton back in the game, cruising to an 82-69 victory over Barton College. 

Men's Basketball
vs Pfeiffer | Saturday, Nov. 4 | 7:00 p.m. | Qubein Center

Last time HPU hit the court was at the Hercules Tires Big South Tournament against Charleston Southern last season. High Point came out with electric energy, taking the early lead 19-9, however, the Bucs started to chip away at HPU's lead as the half came to a close, 40-30, with High Point still in the lead. After intermission, Charleston Southern buckled down on defense, putting pressure on High Point's shooters and making it difficult for the Panthers to make shots. The Buccaneers tied up the game at 69's before pushing the lead two points more to close out the game with a Panther loss, 72-70. 

Pfeiffer University last played Brevard in the USA South Conference Tournament opener. Pfeiffer initially trailed by six points, before tying up the game at 43's at the end of the half. The Falcons fought to take the lead in the second, but to no avail as Brevard pushed its lead and eventually secured the victory 90-84.

High Point has only played Pfeiffer one time in 2022. High Point took a 10-point lead in the first five minutes of play. The Falcons attempted to trim down the Panther's lead, but High Point kept pushing, eventually taking a 34-point lead to close out the half. HPU didn't slow down in the second, pushing its lead even further to 50 points until Pfeiffer slowly start to chip away, bringing the lead down to 40. Despite cutting down the Panther's lead, Pfeiffer was still unable to stop High Point's electric momentum, leading to a High Point victory, 109-71.
