Qubein Center Facts
HIGH POINT, N.C.-- This past weekend (Sept. 24-26th) High Point University saw the Grand Opening of the Nido and Mariana Qubein Arena & Conference Center occur with three days filled with celebration. The Qubein Center is a $170 million-dollar state-of-the-art facility, that will be the new home of HPU Basketball on the Donna and Tubby Smith Court, a space for engaged learning inside the conference center, and a place for enjoyment and experimental learning in the Jana and Ken Kahn Hotel.
On Friday night, the official ribbon cutting of the Qubein Center occurred as a crowd of hundreds gathered outside of the newly constructed Qubein Center to hear speeches from HPU Senior Vice President Chris Dudley, HPU Athletic Director Dan Hauser, High Point Mayor Jay Wagner, Board of Trustees Chair Bob Brown, and HPU Vice President of Academic Affairs Angela Bauer. Mariana Qubein was honored with the key to the city of High Point by Mayor Jay Wagner, and of course, the ribbon to the Qubein Center was cut by President Nido Qubein with his family by his side.
"The Qubein Center will open today as the finest collegiate basketball arena in the country," Hauser said to the crowd at the ribbon-cutting on Friday night. "The facility will transform our Athletic Department and the student-athlete experience for the century ahead. The Qubein Center will immediately impact our ability to recruit the nation's best basketball talent to High Point University."
Grand Opening weekend was a star-studded affair as GRAMMY Award-winning country music singer-songwriter Lee Greenwood performed, as well as the legendary Carolina beach music group The Chairmen of the Board on Friday night alone. Friday evening was capped off with a dazzling firework display.
On Saturday night, the first major event occurred inside the Qubein Center as Multi-GRAMMY and Billboard award-winning rock band Train played a concert to a jammed, packed capacity crowd. Train played all of their hits including Drops of Jupiter, Meet Virginia, Hey, Soul Sister, and even a few covers much to the delight of the family weekend crowd.
On Sunday, High Point families and supporters came together again for the Family Weekend Worship Service. Attendees of the worship service heard messages from both HPU Rev. Preston Davis and Bestselling author, internationally renowned leadership expert, and HPU Executive Coach in Residence, John Maxwell.
The actor, best known for his role as Superman, producer, and television presenter, HPU Artist in Residence Dean Cain, and Dallas Mavericks Chief Executive Officer and HPU Sports Executive in residence Cynt Marshall both presented to HPU families and students as well over the Grand Opening weekend.
The exciting weekend was a fitting tribute to HPU's most expansive building project, yet, this inspiring environment is only scratching the surface of incredible moments it will provide to the entire High Point University community and the City of High Point. The Qubein Center is here. Â
