WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - High Point University track and field proceeded to compete in its second meet of the indoor season at JDL Fast Track, completing day one of the annual Camel City Invite in Winston-Salem. The afternoon was highlighted by a handful of PRs from the Panther men, while senior
Britton Mann tallied a new program record in the weight throw.
Starting in the one mile, the Panthers had success on the track as well, with freshman
Spencer Smucker setting the tone for the day on his 4:27.88 personal best. Siro Pina Cardona and
Jake Dunn each had impressive performances in the 800m, with the former crossing the finish line in fourth (1:55.95). Dunn followed just a few paces back in sixth, collecting a new PR at 1:57.15.
Beating his previous best by nearly a meter-and-a-half, Mann tossed the greatest weight throw in history at JDL with a distance of 15.92m. His performance beat out a four-year old record set by former HPU thrower
Christian Spaulding at the same venue in 2015, and currently sits seventh in the Big South in 2019.
Freshman
Paul Gore continues to be one of the Panthers' strongest sprinters, finishing fifth in the 60m in a time of 6.97. Gore's time was the top in his heat and good enough to qualify him for the event semis on Saturday, currently standing sixth in the field.
Running an 8.55 in the hurdle prelims, recently named Big South Indoor Field Athlete of the Week
Pablo Romero, came within two hundredths of a second of his personal record in the final to take seventh overall (7.51).
Day one ended with the men's 3000m where
Hocine Bouchrak took fourth in a time of 8:19.25, less than four seconds off the field leader.
