Panthers Travel to Wofford in First Road Game of Season

The High Point University men's basketball team makes its first road trip of the season as the Panthers head to Spartanburg to take on Wofford on Saturday (Nov. 9). The game will be broadcast on ESPN 3, fans can also listen to voice of the Panthers Daron Vaught call the action with coverage beginning at 6:45. HPU faces Wofford for the third season in a row. The Terriers come into the 2019-2020 after making it to the second round of the NCAA Tournament a season ago. 

 Matchup History

  • The all-time series is a close one between the Panthers and the Terriers as Wofford leads 9-12. This will be the 22nd meeting of the two teams and the third in three consecutive seasons. 
  • The last meeting between the two came in High Point's home opener against Wofford. The Terriers won 68-60. Denny Slay was the leading scorer in the contest for HPU with 11 points.

 Panther Notes 

  • The Panthers come into this game following a 70-56 setback against William & Mary. Freshman John Michael Wright was HPU's leading scorer against the tribe with 17 points. 
  • Freshman Emanuel Izunabor provided great energy for the Panthers in his last time out. Izunabor had three blocks, six rebounds, and added four points. The Fayetteville native did all of this while being defending NBA prospect Nathan Knight.
  • Sophomore Curtis Holland did an outstanding job of getting to the free-throw line as he took 10 free throws against William & Mary. Holland finished the night with nine points.
  • Coach Tubby Smith is entering his 28th season as a head coach and second at his alma mater.
  • Freshman Eric Coleman Jr. led the way in rebounds for the Purple and White the last time out bringing in seven boards. Coleman Jr also added five points. 
  • This game against Wofford starts a stretch of four road games, with the Wofford game being followed by the Gotham Classic. 
  • High Point has not faced Wofford on the road since 2014, this will be High Point's first time playing in Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium which opened its doors in 2017. 

 Across the Bench

  • Wofford is led by a new head coach, Jay McAulley, who had previously been serving as the associate head coach of the Terriers. 
  • The Terriers added five newcomers to their lineup. Wofford returns only two starters but they welcome back 8 additional players.
  • Senior guard Nathan Hoover leads the group of returners for the Terriers. Hoover is leading scorers amongst returners, the Memphis, Tennessee native averaged 13.6 points last season.
  • Wofford is coming off of an 86-63 victory over Erskine College in their home opener. Nathan Hoover led the way in points as he scored 18 and brought in a team-best eight rebounds in the win. 
  • Chevez Goodwin helped out in the win in a variety of ways as he added 14 points, five rebounds, two assists, and two steals for Wofford.
  • Isaiah Bigelow was leading bench scorer for Wofford scoring 14 points while only playing 19 minutes. 

Up Next: The Gotham Classic starts for High Point as they will travel to Chestnut Hill, Mass to play Boston College in their first game of the Gotham Classic. Tipoff at Conte Forum is scheduled for 7 p.m.
