The High Point women's soccer team played to a 0-0 draw against Longwood on Wednesday night (Oct 23). The result allowed the Panthers to clinch sole possession of the Big South regular-season title. The Panthers become the only team in program history to complete an undefeated Big South regular season. HPU became the first Big South school to go undefeated since the conference expanded to ten or more teams. They are the first Big South team to go undefeated in conference play since UNC Asheville in 2004.
"Overall, it's not the result we wanted tonight, but I am really proud of the team for giving everything they had in this game. Said head coach Brandi Fontaine. "Longwood is a very good team and they gave us a run for our money. But, I was happy that our team could at least come away with a tie and bring home a regular-season conference championship."Â
From opening kick-off, the play between the Panthers and Lancers was highly competitive, neither team ever gave the other enough space to make their move. The Lancers were outshooting the Panthers for a majority of the first half but High Point would battle back and head into the break with a 5-3 advantage in shots. Emma Schossler had one of the best chances as her shot in the 31st nearly found the net. Four panthers combined for the five shots in the first.
In the second half, High Point added six more shots as HPU continued to apply offensive pressure. Carsyn Gold had a quality chance that ended up not connecting. Alex Palmer and Emma Schossler provided two more shots for the Panthers later in the half that required stellar saves from Longwood's keeper Van Dyke.Â
After 90 minutes overtime was required, in the extra periods, the Lancers and the Panthers continued to match each other. Each overtime period only saw one shot a piece from each team. Carsyn Gold took a shot in the 105th minute that nearly connected. High Point kept the pressure on until the final moments, Juliette Vidal took a corner for HPU in 108th minute, the Lancer defense eliminated the chance.
The 0-0 draw gave Talia Klimes a conference-best six shutouts in Big South play. With the draw, the Panthers clinched their fifth Big South regular-season title. (2010, 2012, 2016, 2017, and 2019). With the regular season complete the Panthers await their opponent for the Big South Quarterfinals. High Point will host their quarterfinal game in Vert Stadium on November 1st at 7 pm.Â
