HPU Unable To Surmount Early UNCW Lead

• High Point University came up short in their first road challenge of the young 2018 season, falling to UNCW 2-0 this past Sunday.
• Goalkeepers Charlotte Kennedy and Emily Lyon combined for 7 saves over the 90 minute contest, with the former tallying four stops overall
• Freshman Caitlin Shepherd has been a pivotal part of the High Point offense in the first two contests of her collegiate career. Registering her second straight match with a shot on goal, Shepherd, is one of four Panthers with a goal to her name in the young 2018 campaign.

HIGH POINT, N.C.-- High Point saw its record draw to an even 1-1 this past Sunday, as a competitive UNCW squad took advantage of an early Panthers dismissal to produce a 2-0 win over visiting HPU.

High Point goalkeeper Charlotte Kennedy was tested early in her first start of the 2018 season, making four stops in the first 45 minutes. The senior finished her night one save short of the career-high she set against Ohio last year, before getting replaced by teammate Emily Lyon at the half.

The Seahawks started the scoring after breaking the scoreless tie in the 23rd minute. The Panthers mounted some offense of their own in an attempt to even things up, with freshman forward Caitlin Shepherd tallying her side's first shot on goal of the evening.

UNCW's offense continued to add pressure through the latter stages of the opening half, doubling their lead in the 31st minute, before a controversial red card decision shortened HPU to just 10 players in the 36th.

"I was very happy with how this young group responded to being a man down for the last 50-plus minutes." said head coach Brandi Fontaine. "This week we will continue building the puzzle pieces needed to teach this young group our new system."

With the odds mounted against them the High Point offense continued to put on pressure, but the club's shortened lineup was unable to draw even with their hosts in the final 45 minutes of play. Playing with an extra player, the Seahawks played a possession game for the majority of the second half, with the final ending in favor of the home team 2-0.

COMING UP NEXT
The Panthers continue their non-conference schedule with another road contest, heading into Richmond to face off with VCU this coming Friday at 7:30 p.m. HPU is 0-1-1 against the Rams all-time, but will be playing the Richmond-based squad for the first time since 2012.
