High Point Notes:
• High Point began its season with a 1-0 victory over Appalachian State on Friday. Sophomore
Maggie Gruber scored her first career goal off an assist from freshman
Mackenzie Mullins in the 18th minute.
• Senior goalkeeper
Alex Hank, who was named the Big South Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, began the season with her 21st career shutout. She saved all three shots on goal against the Mountaineers. Hank has already set the school record for victories (29) and shutouts (21).Â
• Hank is one of 15 seniors on the team, which accounts for nearly half of the 32-member roster. The senior class has won 38 games in three-plus years and needs seven wins to become the all-time winningest class in HPU Div. I history.
• HPU brings back a Big South-high 24 letterwinners from a year ago, including eight starters, which is tied for the second-most in the conference.
• High Point is 0-3-2 all-time against members of the SEC. This is the first of four matchups against SEC teams for the Panthers this season (South Carolina, Ole Miss, Auburn)
Â
Georgia Notes:
• The Bulldogs dropped their season opener on Friday evening at home against Wake Forest, 1-0. UGA outshot Wake 11-9, but ceded a goal in the 39th minute that was the difference.
• Georgia was 6-11-1 in 2016, including a 2-8 mark in the SEC. The team returns 16 players from a year ago while welcoming in 12 newcomers.
• Mariel Gutierrez, Louise Hogrell, and Katie Higgins were all named to the SEC Preseason Watch List. Hogrell received the honor for the third straight year while Gutierrez was tabbed for the second straight year. Higgins earned the accolade as a freshman.
• Hogrell, a senior, is the team's goalkeeper and returns after playing all but 15 minutes in 2016. She led the SEC with 94 saves a year ago.
• Billy Lesesne is in his third season at the helm of the Bulldog program and holds an 11-24-2 record.
Series Notes:
• High Point and Georgia battled to a 0-0 draw in the only prior matchup on Aug. 21, 2015 at Vert Stadium.
• Then-sophomore
Alex Hank recorded six saves in the contest.
