CONWAY, S.C. - The High Point University women's soccer team was triumphant in its second and final exhibition of the 2017 season, 2-0, over the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Friday night.
The Panthers once again showcased their strong depth with 26 players participating in the field. The squad's four goalkeepers combined for the clean sheet, saving both of Coastal Carolina's shots on net. HPU outshot CCU 11-8, including a 6-2 edge in shots on goal.
"This was a good step in the right direction in preparation of our first regular season game," head coach Marty Beall said. "This was a good result against a very athletic and well coached Coastal Carolina team. I'm very proud of our girls tonight."
HPU jumped on top in the 20th minute on a goal from sophomore Alex Denny, who took advantage of a failed cross to volley it home.
The Panthers added on in the 54th minute when senior Bri Jean-Charles, who was seeing her first action of the exhibition year, scored off a set piece. Senior Taylor Romano served the ball into the box, where it was cleared out to senior Michele Micciche. The forward then played it on to Jean-Charles, who used great composure to net High Point's second goal.
The Panthers now turn their attention to the season opener on Friday, Aug. 18 at Appalachian State at 4 p.m. HPU opens its home slate a week later on Friday, Aug. 25 against Ohio at 7 p.m.
