LIVE STATSLIVE VIDEOHIGH POINT, N.C. – The High Point University women's soccer team continues their two-game road swing to open up Big South play on Wednesday, Sept. 30, with a game at Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.
High Point will try and bounce back from its 1-0 loss at Longwood to open conference play last week. The Panther loss was just their second of the season as HPU fell to 5-2-3 overall and 0-1-0 in the Big South.
The Panthers have scored 13 goals in 10 games this season and have six multi-goal games. Sophomores
Becca Rolfe and
Michele Micciche are tied for the team lead with three goals and six points apiece. Seven other HPU players have scored one goal this season. Sophomore
Meredith Dunker is tops on the team with three assists followed closely by redshirt-sophomore
Bailey Beattie and sophomore
Taylor Romano with two each.
High Point has boasted a strong defensive unit this season, having allowed just six goals while posting five shutouts. Sophomore
Alex Persiani has played in seven games with six starts and is 2-2-3 with a 0.70 goals-against average and three shutouts. She is currently tops in the Big South in goals-against average and second in save percentage.
Gardner-Webb is 3-5-2 overall and 0-1-0 in the Big South following a 2-1 home loss to Winthrop over the weekend. Brandi Arey notched her fourth goal of the season in the loss for the Runnin' Bulldogs.
Arey leads Gardner-Webb with 10 points and two assists and is tied for the team lead in goals along with Shelby Hooe. Sydney David (2), Justine Ibarra (1) and Sam Grove (1) have the other goals for GWU through 10 games. Keely Brown has played every minute in goal for Gardner-Webb this season and is 3-5-2 with a 1.13 goals-against average and four shutouts.
High Point is 7-2-3 in 12 all-time meetings with Gardner-Webb. Last season, The Panthers and Runnin' Bulldogs played to a scoreless draw in Vert Stadium. HPU's last win over Gardner-Webb came in 2013 when HPU earned a 1-0 win in Boiling Springs, N.C.
