The High Point University women's soccer team played UNC Asheville to a 1-1 draw on the road in Asheville, N.C., on Wednesday afternoon. Redshirt-freshman Kelsey Perrell scored her team-high sixth goal of the year for HPU in the contest.

"That was a very average performance by us today," head coach Marty Beall said. "Our team defending was ok but our inability to finish easy chances was horrible. We missed five or six one-on-ones with the goalkeeper. When you do that you don't deserve to win."

The Panthers fell behind 1-0 in the 21st minute on a goal from distance by Asheville's Kennedy Garrett. Garrett received a pass from Shenny Lehhart and hit a shot from 30 yards out that snuck under the crossbar at the far post to put the Bulldogs ahead.

Perrell tied the game in the 56th minute, scoring her sixth goal of the season to knot the game at 1-1. Senior Sammy Vercellino took the ball up the right flank and delivered a cross into the box to Perrell. The redshirt-freshman beat the Asheville keeper to the ball and flicked it over and into the net for the goal.

The Panthers outshot Asheville 11-0 in extra time but were unable to find the game winner. HPU had several close chances including a shot by senior Becca Hemby that was saved off the line by a Bulldog defender and a shot by senior Taylor Parker that forced a diving stop by the Asheville keeper.

HPU finished the game with a 28-18 edge in shots and a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal. Hemby took 11 shots in the game with four on frame. Senior Jesse May made five saves in the draw while Bulldog keeper Heather Muller made 11 saves.

The Panthers move to 5-8-1 overall and 3-3-1 in the Big South with the draw. Asheville goes to 5-8-2 overall and 1-4-2 in the Big South.

High Point returns home on Saturday, Oct. 19, when the team will welcome Radford University to Vert Stadium. The game is the second half of an HPU soccer double header and will kick off at approximately 7:30 p.m., after the conclusion of the game between the men's soccer team and Winthrop.
