The High Point University women's soccer team outshot Francis Marion 21-4 but couldn't overcome a second-half Patriot goal and took a 2-1 loss on Sunday afternoon in Florence, S.C. Sophomore Becca Hemby scored for the Panthers.

"It was a disappointing effort by our team here today," said head coach Marty Beall. "The other team just wanted it more and showed that throughout the 90 minutes. We need to regroup now and get ready to face Virginia Tech next week."

The Panthers fell to 0-1-1 on the season while Francis Marion improved to 1-1-0.

Francis Marion took an early 1-0 lead when Yasmin Bunter pounced on a loose ball in the box and hit a low shot to the left post past a diving Andrea Ritchie.

High Point responded with a goal of its own in the 21st minute. Hemby got on the end of a Jenny Ashurst cross and headed it in to tie the game at 1-1. Ashurst was freed down the right side by a pass from Katie Harris and lofted a cross across to Hemby at the far post with her first touch.

Francis Marion took the lead for good in the 59th minute on a goal Elizabeth Asare. The FMU forward managed t split the HPU defense and finished a one-on-one chance against Ritchie to put the Patriots ahead, 2-1. Ritchie made one save in the game.

High Point's four-game road trip continues on Friday, Aug. 26, when the Panthers travel to Blacksburg, Va., to face Virginia Tech. Kick-off for the game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
