Women's soccer drops 4-0 decision to Charlotte

BOX SCORE

The High Point University women's soccer team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 4-0 loss to Charlotte on Friday night in Vert Stadium. High Point had seven shots on goal in the contest including two by junior Katie Taber.

“Unless we show up to play every game the way we are capable of playing we will not be successful this fall,” head coach Marty Beall said. “Tonight we did not show up ready to play and Charlotte is a talented team with a great coaching staff. We just couldn't get it done tonight.”

Charlotte controlled the run of play early and after several dangerous chances got on the board twice with two goals in a three minute span. Whitney Weinruaub scored the first 49ers goal running onto a cross in the box in the 16th minute while Macky Wingo doubled the Charlotte lead with a goal in the 18th minute that came at the end of a run up the center of the pitch.

The 49ers doubled their lead in the second half with goals by Brooke Mulloy and Oni Bernard. Mulloy corralled a ball that was partially cleared by the Panthers off a corner and scored with a low shot from 10-yards out in the 65th minute and Bernard scored off a counter attack with a shot from 20-yards out in the 75th minute.

HPU had two quality scoring chances in the second half that missed by inches, both hitting off the crossbar and rebounding back into play. The first came in the 52nd minute when senior Jillie Johnston had a header in the box hit off the woodwork while the second came on a shot from 30-yards out by sophomore Danielle Schepler in the 74th minute.

High Point falls to 2-8-0 on the season while Charlotte improves to 6-3-0.

The Panthers will kick-off their conference season on Saturday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Conway, S.C., to play Coastal Carolina. Kick-off against the Chanticleers is set for 7 p.m.
