The High Point University track & field program has added an AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill to give the Panthers an advantage in adding low impact mileage as well as reducing stress while rehabbing injuries. HPU is just the third program in the Southeast with an AlterG Treadmill.
"The AlterG Treadmill gives us an incredible tool to help our athletes – distance runners in particular – improve and get to the national level we're striving for at High Point University," said HPU head coach
Mike Esposito. "One big advantage is to reduce impact for our athletes who may be coming back from an injury and help them come back more quickly. The other major advantage is adding supplemental mileage for our athletes – they are able to get the additional aerobic development without the stress on their bodies."
"We were able to purchase the AlterG through donations from alumni and parents and we are extremely thankful to the people who made this possible," said Esposito.
The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill creates a powerful lifting force using air pressure, which allows for low-impact running at the level the user sets. The user wears special shorts that zip into an air-tight enclosure over the treadmill. By raising or lowering the air pressure in the enclosure, the user can raise or lower his or her body weight to reduce the impact when running.
Primary uses of the AlterG Treadmill are:
• Rehabilitation
• Performance enhancement
• Increasing training volume and minimizing stress-related injuries
• Maximize fitness retention during rehabilitation
High Point University added the AlterG Treadmill this fall and HPU student-athletes have already begun to take advantage of it. Several of HPU's runners have been able to increase the amount of miles logged in training, while others have been able to use it to get through minor injuries without losing fitness.
