Women's soccer drops heartbreaker to Charleston Southern, 3-2

BOX SCORE

The High Point University women's soccer team came back from a two-goal deficit to force overtime against Charleston Southern before falling in the second overtime period, 3-2, Monday afternoon in Charleston, S.C. Freshmen Brooke Lisson and Kelli Joline each scored in the comeback.

“We did not play well in the first half and when you don't execute against a team with the fire power that Charleston Southern has you will get punished,” head coach Marty Beall said. “The effort is always there but if we want to think about winning the Big South we have to play the way we are capable for 90 minutes not 45.”

After falling behind by two in the first half, High Point got on the board in the 55th minute when at the end of a stretch of possession senior Sara Rager shook a defender at the left edge of the box and sent a cross towards the penalty spot where Lisson hit it out of the air and into the net. The goal was Lisson's second of the season.

HPU continued to apply offensive pressure as Rager almost tied the game just two minutes later with a shot from the left wing to the near post which ran just wide.

The Panthers found the equalizer in the 61st minute on Joline's second goal of the season. Junior Katie Taber ran onto a punt by junior goalkeeper Andrea Ritchie and lofted a ball over the Charleston Southern defense. Joline possessed the ball in the box and turned with the keeper on her back, hitting the ball into the empty net.

High Point had three chances from inside 10 yards in the final five minutes but two shots by Joline and one shot by freshman Sammy Vercellino all went just off frame as regulation ended with the game tied 2-2.

Charleston Southern found the golden goal in the 102nd minute when CSU's Michelle Dennis knocked down a cross from Staci Ulichnie and scored with a shot to the lower left corner past a sprawling Ritchie.

The Buccaneers opened the scoring in the 14th minute when Marky Boyce ran onto a rebound from her own blocked shot and hit it past a defender at the left post. The goal was the 14th of the season for the nation's leading scorer.

Ritchie kept the deficit at one in the 29th minute when she stonewalled Boyce in a one-on-one situation. Boyce got in behind the HPU defense and hit a shot to the far post but Ritchie dove at full extension to tip it away.

CSU extended its lead in the 25th minute when the Buccaneers' Caitlin Wesnesky delivered a ball over the backline to Toney Lashely who ran in on net and beat Ritchie with a high shot into the roof of the net.

HPU falls to 3-9-0 overall and 1-1-0 in the Big South while Charleston Southern improves to 8-4-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the Big South.

High Point next returns home to play Gardner-Webb on Saturday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m. The Panthers beat GWU, 2-0, in the teams' last meeting in the first round of the Big South Tournament.
