Abbott sets single-season save record in 2-0 loss

BOX SCORE

The High Point University women's soccer team fell, 2-0, to Liberty Saturday at Vert Stadium. Senior goalie Marisa Abbott (Troy, N.Y./Tamarac) had five saves in the game, to bring her season total to 95 saves. She now holds HPU's single season save record, previously held by Cindy Watts in the 2000 season.

“We played a very good Liberty team and they capitalized on their chances,” said head coach Marty Beall. “We didn't finish and that was the difference in the game.”

The Flames got on the board first, scoring with just nine seconds left in the first half. Bekah Moye scored her first goal of the season on a breakaway down the right side. She slid the ball past Abbott, who had come out of the net. Madison Short was credited with the assist.

Each team registered six shots in the first half, but High Point committed seven fouls while Liberty was whistled for just two. Janay Whittaker (Stone Mountain, Ga./Peideia) had two shots on goal in the half.

Abbott kept it a one-goal deficit with a kick save in the 77th minute on a shot by Silvia Betancourt from the left corner of the box.

Liberty put in an insurance goal in the 86th minute. Aimee Luurtsema scored her second goal of the season on a free kick from the left side of the box, which she slid in to the right corner. Betancourt got the assist.

Whittaker had two chances to put HPU on the board in the final minutes. In the 88th minute, she put two shots on goal but Liberty keeper Karen Blocker came up with both saves.

High Point is back in action Oct. 24 when the Panthers host VMI at 6 p.m. at Vert Stadium.
