The High Point women's soccer team dropped a disappointing 2-1 double-overtime decision to Charleston Southern on Saturday night in Big South Conference action at Vert Track & Soccer Stadium.
HPU slips to 7-3-4 overall and 3-1-0 in the league following their first loss in five games, while the Lady Bucs moved to 7-4-2 (2-1-1 Big South) with their dramatic win.
After a slow start by both squads, the Panthers grabbed the lead when Laura Eldridge finished a well played cross along the endline from Robin Pecoraro into the back of the net in the 19th minute of action. The goal, which was Eldridge's team-leading sixth score of the year, gave High Point a 1-0 lead. The assist was the first of Pecoraro's collegiate career.
Neither team was able to tally a goal for the remainder of the opening period as HPU carried their one-goal advantage into the halftime break. During the second half the teams had scoring opportunities as the two offenses battled back and forth combining for 13 shot attempts and forcing five saves from the goalkeeping duo.
The Panthers seemed to be headed for victory before CSU earned a late corner kick and recorded the game tying score with just two seconds remaining in regulation. Sarah Catenacci played the ball from the corner into the middle of the box finding the head of Caitlin Wesnesky, who redirected the ball into the Panther net to knot the score at 1-1.
After a scoreless first overtime period that included just one shot attempt by either team, Charleston Southern scored the game winning goal just over three minutes into the second extra frame. Lindsey Trexler fed a ball into the box to Emma Mattsson, who then flicked a pass to Michelle Dennis at the six-yard line. Dennis quickly knocked it into the side of the net before the HPU defense could get to her.
For the game, HPU netminder Marisa Abbott posted a season-best six saves while Lady Buc goalie Alyssa Budros finished with five saves.
High Point will visit Big South newcomer Presbyterian on Wednesday at 4 p.m., in the squad's next to last regular season road contest.
