Men's Basketball Speeds Past Charleston Southern, 74-56

Arizona Reid scored a career-high 14 points and Landon Quick and Jerry Echenique added 10 points apiece to help High Point cruise past Charleston Southern, 74-56, Monday night in Big South Conference men's basketball action in the Millis Center.

The Panthers (12-14, 7-6 Big South) are now tied for third place in the Conference with UNC Asheville. Charleston Southern dips to 9-14 (6-7 in the Big South), and falls into a fifth-place tie with Coastal Carolina.

Six Panthers scored at least seven points, including Zione White, who tossed in eight points to go with a career-high nine rebounds.

Terrell Brown led the Bucs with 17 points.

HPU held a 44-27 advantage on the boards, and outscored the Bucs 40-20 in the paint. The Panthers shot 47 percent from the field to CSU's 36 percent.

High Point used an early 15-3 run to jump out to a 20-11 lead. After the Bucs scored five straight points to get within 20-16 following a layup and free throw by Kurtis Rice, Reid responded with back-to-back buckets for the Panthers and High Point scored the final nine points of the half to carry a 41-24 cushion to intermission. Quick provided the exclamation point with a long three-pointer as the first-half buzzer sounded.

HPU limited the Bucs to 30 percent shooting in the first half and outrebounded CSU 30-11 in the first 20 minutes.

The Panthers picked up where they left off in the second half and led by 26 points at 60-34 after White canned a three-pointer with 12:13 left. The closest CSU came the rest of the way was 17 points.

Three Charleston Southern players (Thomas Harrison, Jovan Jegdic, Chris Moore) scored six points each. Darius Lane added a game-high five assists, while Donnell Covington notched four helpers.

HPU's Mark Wilson earned his first-career start and tallied seven points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Quick added four assists for HPU, while Titus Byrd and Akeem Scott collected three each.

High Point visits Big South leader Winthrop Saturday at 4:30 pm in Rock Hill. Charleston Southern hosts crosstown rival The Citadel Thursday at 7:00 pm.
