Women's Soccer Outlasts Gardner-Webb, 4-3

Amy Anzovino scored twice and Carolyn Bader put home the game-winner in the 80th minute to give High Point a wild 4-3 win over Gardner-Webb Monday night in non-conference women's soccer action in Boiling Springs.

The Panthers (6-5-0) snapped a two-game skid to get back on track, while the Bulldogs fall to 5-6-0.

High Point, which got goals from Anzovino, Bader and Jen Evans, is now a perfect 5-0-0 when scoring more than one goal this season.

HPU goalkeeper Hannah Nail made a pair of saves.

Bader scored the decisive goal at the 79:51 mark, banging home an Evans pass into an open net just seconds after checking back into the match.

Gardner-Webb's Brittany Woods scored a pair of goals for her first career multi-goal game. Anzovino's two tallies represented her second two-goal game of the season.

Woods picked up the game's first goal in the 22nd minute of play, taking a Leeanna Woodworth pass at the top of the box and putting it away lower left off the hands of Nail.

The Panthers wasted little time drawing even, with Anzovino scoring the first of her two goals on the day just 1:13 later. Ryan Hays earned the assist on the play, sending a free kick in from the left side that Anzovino collected and put away lower left.

Anzovino gave High Point its first lead of the day in the 52nd minute, corralling a Traci Andersen cross that went off the hands of GWU keeper Sue Rettinger and putting it home from close range.

Gardner-Webb would rally to tie the affair, with Woodworth scoring her 13th goal of the season in the 57th minute. Catherine Kobelka started the play in the HPU midfield, sending a ball to Woodworth's feet just outside the box. Woodworth then turned, took two dribbles and fired it home upper left to make it a 2-2 game.

The scoring was far from done, and High Point went back on top in the 62nd minute. Evans picked up her third goal of the season when she converted an Anzovino pass from close range.

Woods came to the rescue for the Bulldogs, scoring an improbable goal in the 79th minute to once again tie the game. Woods got her second goal of the day with a chip shot from the right side, floating it over Nail and into the back of the net far post.

HPU would regain the lead for good, with Bader taking a pass from Evans in the left side of the box and scoring into an open net after Rettinger came out to defend Evans.

The stat lines were fairly balanced on the night, with both teams logging 14 shots. HPU had five corner kicks to GWU's three, while the Bulldogs were whistled for 11 fouls to High Point's 10.

The Panthers take some time off before an Oct. 12 visit to Big South foe Liberty. Kickoff is set for 7:00 pm in Lynchburg, Va.
