Jen Evans and
Carolyn Bader scored first-half goals and freshman goalkeeper
Katie Myers recorded her first-career shutout as High Point blanked Belmont, 2-0, Sunday afternoon in Nashville, Tenn.
HPU improves to 2-4, while the Bruins dropped to 0-7-1 on the season.
The Panthers got both their goals in an early first-half flurry. Evans, HPU's leading goal-scorer, tallied her fourth goal of the season when she buried a shot low and behind Belmont goalkeeper Ali Young in the 8th minute for a 1-0 Panther lead.
Just minutes later, HPU made it 2-0 when Wendy Williams played a ball through the Bruin defense that led to a breakaway for Bader, who chipped the ball over Young's head for her first goal of the season.
It was more of the same after halftime, as the Panthers held Belmont to just one shot the rest of the way. All four of Myers' saves came in the first half.
HPU outshot the Bruins 18-6 for the match.
The Panthers return home to open Big South Conference play Friday afternoon against Birmingham-Southern (5:00 pm), and host in-state rival North Carolina State Sunday afternoon (2:00 pm). Admission is free for both matches at Albion Millis Stadium.
