Women's Soccer Falls At UNCW, 3-1

High Point led 1-0 at halftime following a Jen Evans goal, but UNC Wilmington found the net three times over a 12 minute span in the second half to claim a 3-1 win over the Panthers Friday night in Wilmington.

The Seahawks improved to 4-2 on the season, while the Panthers fell to 1-2.

Evans staked the Panthers to an early 1-0 lead when she lofted a 30-yard strike over the head of Seahawk goalie Rachael Wilson in the 6th minute of play. It was her second goal of the season, which ties her for the team lead with Emily Lanham.

But UNCW'S Kristine Mengle struck for two goals in a six-minute stretch, including the equalizer in the 56th minute and the go-ahead goal in the 62nd minute to put the Seahawks in charge. The goals were the fifth and sixth of the year for Mengle. Justine Hammer was credited with assists on both scores.

UNCW got an insurance goal in the 70th minute when Jennifer Bartuca took a pass from Mengle and scored her first goal of the year.

Katie Smith made two saves in net for the Panthers, who were outshot 9-4.

HPU continues its road trip by making the short drive to face old rival Elon Sunday afternoon at 2:00 pm.
