Lanham Nets Hat Trick In HPU's 7-3 Win Over Winthrop

High Point's Emily Lanham scored three goals to lead the Panthers to a wild 7-3 win over Winthrop in a Wednesday night shootout at the Winthrop Soccer Stadium in Rock Hill, S.C.

Jen Evans tallied a pair of goals for HPU, which remained unbeaten in Big South play, while Carolyn Bader and Wendy Williams each had one goal apiece.

The Panthers improve to 4-5-0 (2-0-0 in the Big South), while the Eagles dropped their first-ever Big South contest (3-8-1, 0-1-1).

The final tally was the most goals scored by the Panthers in a game since HPU's 9-0 win over Mount Olive on Sept. 12, 1997, and its the largest margin of victory since last season's 5-0 win over Coastal Carolina in the first round of the Big South Tournament.

Winthrop opened the scoring in the 2nd minute on the first of Whitney Sanders' two goals of the night, but the lead was short-lived as Evans got the equalizer in the 8th minute off an assist from Ryan Hays. The Lady Eagles reclaimed the lead in the 13th minute on Sanders' second goal, but the Panthers tied things up just 18 seconds later on Williams' unassisted score.

Evans' second goal in the 17th minute (off another Hays assist), and unassisted goals by Lanham in the 22nd and 40th minutes, plus Bader's score in the 44th minute gave the Panthers a commanding 6-2 halftime advantage.

Winthrop's Alex Bouziane made things a little closer in the 64th minute to pull the Lady Eagles within 6-3, but Lanham pushed her third goal of the night across in the 69th minute to complete the scoring at 7-3.

Katie Myers made seven saves in net for the Panthers.

HPU visits Charleston Southern Saturday afternoon (1:00 pm).
