Ron Barrow scored 20 points and Doug Alves made two crucial free throws with 30 seconds left to lift High Point (6-7, 2-0 Big South) to a 77-71 win over Charleston Southern at the Millis Center Monday night. High Point has won its first two Big South contests for the first time since joining the league for the 1998-99 season.
The Panthers stretched a 36-35 halftime lead out to as many as 11 points before the Buccaneers (3-11, 0-3) clawed back. CSU got 20 points from James Seegars, who nailed a three-pointer with 4:09 to play which pulled the Bucs within 64-63. But CSU never re-took the lead, thanks to some clutch free throw shooting by the Panthers, who were 25-of-29 from the charity stripe.
Charleston Southern's Ed O'Neil made a driving layup with 37 seconds left to make it a 72-69 game, but Alves nailed two free throws to give HPU a five-point advantage. Joe Knight came up with a big steal on the other end and hit a pair of foul shots to put the game out of reach.
High Point heads out on the road to face Birmingham-Southern Saturday night. Game time is 8:00 pm EST.
