No. 17 – Four Panthers selected in 2013 MLB Draft

The High Point University baseball team had four players picked in the 2013 MLB Draft.
Jaime Schultz was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 14th round,
Jacob Newberry was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 18th round,
Sean Townsley was selected in the 25th round by the Miami Marlins and
Willie Medina was picked in the 31st round by the Washington Nationals. HPU's four draftees marks a program high.
All four players signed professional contracts and have made their professional debuts over the last month. The four players drafted from High Point is a new program record for the Panthers. The previous single-year high was two players back in 2011 when pitcher Cody Allen and catcher Kyle Mahoney were both selected. Allen is now playing with the Cleveland Indians.
Newberry was selected in the 18th round by the Colorado Rockies and begins his professional career with the Grand Junction Rockies in the Pioneer League. Newberry started 14 games as High Point's Friday night starter and finished the season with a 4-3 record and a 3.07 ERA. He pitched 88 innings and struck out 78 batters. Newberry was seventh in the Big South in strikeouts and 12th in earned run average. The senior allowed three or less earned runs in 10 of his 14 starts including two games in which he did not allow a single run.
Medina was selected in the 31st round by the Washington Nationals and begins his professional career with the GCL Nationals in the Florida Gulf Coast League. Medina started all 58 games for the Panthers at shortstop in 2013 and hit .272 with 23 RBI and 51 runs scored. The shortstop had 12 doubles and two triples and was also was 10-15 on stolen base attempts. Medina led High Point in both at-bats and runs scored and was third on the team in total hits. He finished third in the Big South in runs scored.
Schultz was selected in the 14th round by the Tampa Bay Rays and begins his professional career with the Hudson Valley Renegades in the New York-Penn League. Schultz opened the 2013 season in the bullpen before transitioning into the weekend rotation on April 7 against Longwood. The redshirt-junior pitched at least seven innings in each of his final four starts, allowing just six earned runs in 31 innings of work while striking out 32. Schultz ends his HPU career among the Panthers' Division I leaders in several career pitching categories. He holds the High Point Div. I record for both opposing batting average (.233) and strikeouts per nine innings (9.82). He is also second in ERA (3.90), tied for sixth in wins (10) and tied for sixth in saves (6).
Townsley was selected in the 25th round by the Miami Marlins and begins his professional career with the GCL Marlins in the Florida Gulf Coast League. In his one season with High Point, Townsley went 5-2 and appeared in 18 games with nine starts. The left hander allowed just 53 hits in 57-1/3 innings while striking out 50 batters. Townsley posted a .251 opposing batting average and finished second on the Panthers in wins.
Newberry, Medina, Schultz and Townsley join former Panthers Cody Allen, Jeremy Berg, Tom Boleska and Nate Roberts in professional baseball. Allen is playing in Major League Baseball while Berg, Boleska and Roberts all play in the minor leagues. Berg is playing with the AAA affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the Salt Lake Bees, Boleska is playing with the AA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles, the Bowie Baysox, and Roberts plays with the High-A affiliate of the Minnesota Twins, the Fort Myers Miracle.
