High Point University had four different scorers but couldn't overcome No. 2 North Carolina's attack, taking a 20-4 loss to the Tar Heels on Friday afternoon at Fetzer Field in Chapel Hill, N.C. Junior Heather Ziccarelli had three caused turnovers, two ground balls and two draw controls.

“This game was great to show us what we need to do this summer to prepare to play more teams like this in the future,” said HPU head coach Lyndsey Boswell. “We're excited to bring in our new recruiting class in the fall and add to what we already have. The difference in this game was mainly possession and draw controls. North Carolina is a good team and we wish them luck in the NCAA Tournament.”

High Point finished its season with a 15-4 record, the most wins in history for a first-year NCAA Div. I program. The previous best was a 13-4 record by Navy in 2008. North Carolina improved to 13-4 and will next play in the NCAA Tournament.

HPU's Mackenzie Carroll and Jasmine Jordan scored in the first half and Chelsea Thompson and Christie Dougherty scored in the second. Jordan also added a pair of caused turnovers in the game. The most battle-tested Panther was goalie Lauren Hayes, who faced 23 shots on goal and made three saves.

The Tar Heels got four goals apiece from Becky Lynch and Laura Zimmerman. Lynch also had four assists and Corey Donohoe had three goals, three assists and seven draw controls. Starting goalie Lauren Maksym got the win, making two saves on four shots.

North Carolina controlled the game from the opening draw, getting goals from Zimmerman and Lynch in the first minute en route to a 7-0 lead in the first 6:11 of play. The Tar Heels won the first seven draws of the game before the Panthers got one to work with.

After a goal by UNC's Donohoe, High Point's Jordan grabbed the ensuing draw and, after getting fouled, got the Panthers started down the field. She passed it to Sara Kuhlman, who sent a pass to Carroll for a quick shot and goal 6:32 into the game. The Tar Heels continued to keep the possession for most of the first half before HPU was able to find the net again.

Trailing 13-1, Jordan had the ball deep in the North Carolina zone and drew a foul that led to High Point's first free-possession chance of the game. She took it in for the score to make it 13-2 with 7:34 remaining in the first half. The Tar Heels would open up a 15-2 lead at halftime.

Ziccarelli made two great defensive plays early in the second half that helped the Panthers get possession and keep North Carolina off the board. She intercepted an errant pass on one play before causing another turnover that Cissy Woodyard picked up behind the net. The second half went scoreless until Lynch scored on a pass from behind the net from Donohoe, giving UNC a 16-2 lead 8:52 into the frame.

Ziccarelli's third great defensive play of the half led to the Panthers' third goal of the game. She intercepted a UNC pass on a clear attempt and passed it to Kelsy Mugele, who drew a foul and a free-position attempt. Mugele dumped it to Thompson on her left, who shot it into the top of the net to make it 16-3 with 17:14 remaining.

The Panthers' fourth goal, the last of the game, came on a free position by Dougherty. She started straight in front, went to her right after the whistle and shot it from close range with 3:10 left in the game.

The game wraps up the Panthers' inaugural season. In addition to the Panthers' 15-4 record, High Point won the National Lacrosse Conference Tournament and went 6-1 in the NLC regular season.
