Box Score High Point pounded out 17 hits on the night, scored its third highest run total of the season, but was still outslugged by Virginia Tech, falling to the Hokies 22-13 Wednesday night at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium. The 35 runs scored was the highest combined total at Williard Stadium since HPU began its Division I era.
Virginia Tech (22-12) posted six runs in the first inning, taking command of the ballgame earlier and continued their offensive prowess scoring in the first seven innings en route to them scoring their highest run total this season. All of the damage in the first came after two quick outs were recorded, but High Point was unable to find a way to get the final out. Mike Kamanski singled up the middle driving in two runs, Ty Hohman also singled to centerfield and Ronnie Shaban capped the inning off with a three-run homerun to leftfield for a 6-0 Hokie lead. Kamanski picked up his third RBI of the game with a bases loaded walk forcing in a run in the second.
High Point (14-18) tried to make things interesting posting four runs of their own in the first two innings of play. Jeff Cowan led the game off the game with a single through the right side and moved up to second on a hit-and-run groundout. Billy Alvino singled to leftfield, plating the first run for the Panthers. With two outs in the second, back-to-back singles from Pablo Rosario and Cowan put runners on the corners. Alfie Wheeler doubled in Rosario and moved Cowan up to third base. Bill Manion drew a walk brining up Alvino, who doubled down the leftfield line, forcing in two more runs for the hosts. After two innings of play, VT was ahead 7-4.
The Hokies scored the next five runs and 11 out of the next 14 to seize the game. Steve Bumbry hit a three-run homerun in the third, the first of three homeruns he would hit on the night. Kamanski and Bumbry hit lead-off homeruns in the fourth and fifth innings, respectively. Shaban hit his second long ball of the game in the fifth as well, this one a grand slam.
HPU did not give up, putting five runs up in the seventh to make it a 22-12 contest. After the first two runners of the inning reach safely and moved up to third on a groundout, Cowan walked to load the bases. Wheeler singled to leftfield, allowing Spencer Andrews to score. Manion doubled down the leftfield line plating Sal Pezzino and Cowan. Alvino grounded out to the shortstop, scoring Wheeler for his career high sixth RBI of the game. Kyle Mahoney finished off the scoring for the panthers in the inning with a RBI single up the middle. Pezzino doubled to leftfield and crossed home on a Wheeler single, ending the scoring in the contest.
Alvino, Cowan and Wheeler led the offensive output picking up three hits apiece, combining to score seven runs and driving in nine. Alvino extended his hitting streak to 11-games, picking up multiple hits in 10 of the contests and has recorded six straight games with three hits. During the span, the senior is batting .622 (28-for-45), driving in 28 runs during that span and moved into fifth place on the all-time hits list with 210, surpassing Gerald Culler's mark of 209. Cowan's hitting streak was upped to nine games and is 10 hits shy of breaking the all-time hits record held by Randy Schwartz, who is in the Toronto Blue Jays farm system. He is 16-for-for 35 (.457) during that stretch and scoring 16 runs while sporting a .578 on-base percentage. The second baseman is also nine runs away from breaking the all-time runs scored mark, which has stood for 30 years. Wheeler has had a hit in 15 out of the last 16 ballgames, going 32-for-63 (.508), crossing the plate 22 times and driving in 12.
Max Fulginiti extended his team season-high hitting streak to 22 games with a single in the seventh. It is the second longest active hitting streak in the Big South this season. Mahoney and Rosario each had a pair of hits on the night, while Manion drove in two runs.
For VT, Bumbry and Kamanski paced the lineup combining for eight hits, four homeruns, eight runs scored and 11 runs batted in. Klint Reed, Michael Seaborn, Hohman and Shaban all had multi-hit games on the evening. Jesse Hahn picked up the win, improving to 1-1 on the season. Sean McDermott was the only Hokie pitcher to not allow a run, working a scoreless ninth inning.
High Point will be back in action Friday, April17th when it hosts #12 Coastal Carolina in a Big South three-game set at Coy O. Williard Sr. Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Game two is set for a 6:00 p.m. start on Saturday, April 18th and the series finale will be played on Sunday, April 20th beginning at 1:00 p.m.
